Have you ever eaten such colorful cakes? This is a specialty cake of the Tay ethnic group - Vietnam.
Vietnam has 54 ethnic minority groups. The Kinh people are the predominant Ethnic group in Vietnam, with 85% of the population in the country being Kinh, densely clustered in the delta areas and urban centres.  The remaining 53 ethnic groups live in plains or mountainous areas. In most of my posts , I have written about Kinh dishes, In today's post I will write about a special dish of the Tay people. .I had an article about how to cook five-color sticky rice (Tay's dish), but I was lazy and cooked 3-color sticky rice hahaha. The Tay people always love colorful dishes and the main ingredient is glutinous rice.  In fact, it is called “the five-color cake” because it is made of the five different kinds of sticky rice with five distinctive colors like red, white, yellow, green and black ( or blue, purple). The five colors represent the five elements.

To be specific, green is the color of the forest, white is the color of the metal, yellow is the color of the earth,  red is the color of the fire, and black is the color of the water.  These naturally colorful leaves will then be used to make the yummy cakes like this. Purple (purple leaves), green (pandan leaves), red (gac fruit), blue (blue pea flower), yellow (turmeric), black (black beans or back leaves)

 However, depending of each region’s condition, people can mix or use other colors instead of those colors to make the five-colored cake. 
My mom and my aunt made this dish and I didn't cook them. But I know how to prepare cake ingredients including: peanuts, sugar, glutinous rice, cooking oil. The cake is steamed for 30 minutes, look at these lovely cakes, we made 4 color cakes.

During the covid pandemic, we did everything to make money including cooking cakes and cooking some other dishes for sale. :(((
