Hemos quedado con la mitad de los que llegaron. Ocho europeos, tres americanos, dos asiáticos, dos africanos y uno de oceanía. Los cinco continentes están representados, aunque no distribuidos uniformemente en las llaves. Extrañamos a los que han quedado en el camino, y aplaudimos a quienes han entrado con absoluto mérito. Hablemos de tres de esos encuentros, y de un jugador que esperamos que pueda tener una gran noche en su próximo encuentro.

All five continents are represented, although not evenly distributed in the keys. We miss those who have fallen by the wayside, and applaud those who have entered with absolute merit. Let's talk about three of those matches, and one player who we hope can have a great night in his next match.

**FRANCIA** llega como lider del grupo D, luego de superar a Australia y Dinamarca. Sólo permitió un gol en cada en cuentro. Y ante Túnez, con un equipo alternativo, también permitió un gol, pero no anotaron ninguno. En los últimos segundos del encuentro le anularon un gol que confirmó la alegría del pueblo tunesino, despidiéndose con ese gran logro: ganarle al campeón defensor, sin permitirle anotar. **Didier Deschamps** se mostró inconforme con el resultado y con la anulación del gol. Y aunque reconoció algunas deficiencias con el espíritu mostrado por el equipo, defendió la selección de titulares que hizo en éste tercer partido, en lo cual estoy totalmente de acuerdo: con la clasificación ya asegurada hay que rotar la plantilla disponible y dar descanso a quienes ya tienen varios minutos acumulados. Este tercer partido no es ni la mitad de los que les tocaría jugar a los que aspiran levantar la copa. Por supuesto, se asume el riesgo de que puedan perder, como les pasó a los franceses, con jugadores que primera vez que jugaban juntos. Pero había poco para arriesgar. No es sorpresa ver a Francia este año en los octavos de final, y de primero de grupo. No dudamos de la fortaleza y talento de sus once hombres titulares, y esperamos que no dependa mucho del "segundo equipo" para llegar lejos.

**POLONIA** llegó a los octavos de final, cumpliendo con las expectativas de muchos que analizaron éste grupo. Sin embargo, lo que no estaba previsto es la escases de goles que tienen las águilas blancas. No pudieron anotarle a México ni a Argentina. Sólo Lewandowski y Zielinski anotaron una vez cada uno frente a Arabia Saudita, y desde entonces no han gritado gol los polacos. Y digamos que lo que sí pudo hacer bien es sólo permitir los dos goles argentinos. Así que podemos decir que pasaron de ronda por lo defensivo más que por lo ofensivo, e incluso por la disciplina y el  juego limpio que fue relevante durante unos minutos mientras los dos últimos partidos del grupo se jugaban en simultáneo. Sin duda, ésto debe cambiar para que puedan llegar a los cuartos de final. Es un riesgo sumamente alto depender de la defensa, y más teniendo en el frente a la poderosa Francia. Quizás tenga que ver con el planteamiento del entrenador, quien ha preferido jugar con un 4-5-1, con un **Robert Lewandowski** en ocasiones sólo contra los centrales, dependiendo del despliegue rápido de los volantes ofensivos, y del mediocampo que se convierte en extremos mientras atacan. No estoy seguro que a estas alturas Polonia deba jugar a algo diferente a lo que ya han hecho en los primeros tres partidos, pero de mantener ésta idea, deberán estar muy concentrados, pidiendo que el delantero del Barcelona tenga una noche espléndida y los franceses una noche de terror.

En 1982 estos dos se enfrentaron por el tercer puesto en el mundial de España, siendo victoria para los polacos. Éste duelo, junto con el Portugal vs. Suiza, garantiza la presencia europea en los cuartos de final. También, éste partido tendrá un toque venezolano, aportado por Jesús Valenzuela, Jorge Urrego y Tulio Moreno. ¿Los reconoces? Bueno, son los mismos árbitros que vimos en el Inglaterra vs. Estados Unidos. Volverán a impartir justicia en ésta ocasión, y esperamos que tengan una buena noche, y que salgan en las fotos pero que no sean los protagonistas del encuentro.

**FRANCE** comes in at the top of Group D, after beating Australia and Denmark. They allowed only one goal in each match. And against Tunisia, with an alternative team, they also allowed one goal, but did not score any. In the last seconds of the match, a goal was disallowed, confirming the joy of the Tunisian people, who said goodbye with this great achievement: beating the defending champion, without allowing them to score. **Didier Deschamps was unhappy with the result and the disallowed goal. And although he acknowledged some shortcomings with the spirit shown by the team, he defended the selection of starters he made in this third match, which I fully agree with: with qualification already assured, we must rotate the available squad and give rest to those who have already accumulated several minutes. This third game is not even half of the games that would be played by those who aspire to lift the cup. Of course, there is a risk that they could lose, as happened to the French, with players who were playing together for the first time. But there was little to risk. It is no surprise to see France in the round of 16 this year, and at the top of the group. **POLAND** reached the round of 16, fulfilling the expectations of many who analyzed this group. However, what was not foreseen is the scarcity of goals that the White Eagles have. They were unable to score against Mexico or Argentina. Only Lewandowski and Zielinski scored once each against Saudi Arabia, and the Poles have not scored since. And let's just say that what they did do well was only allow the two Argentine goals. So we can say that they made it through the round more defensively than offensively, and even for the discipline and fair play that was relevant for a few minutes while the last two matches of the group were being played simultaneously. Undoubtedly, this must change if they are to reach the quarterfinals. It is an extremely high risk to depend on the defense, and even more so with the mighty France in front of them. Maybe it has to do with the approach of the coach, who has preferred to play with a 4-5-1, with a **Robert Lewandowski** sometimes only against the center backs, depending on the fast deployment of the attacking midfielders, and the midfield that turns into wingers while attacking. I'm not sure at this stage Poland should be playing anything different to what they have already done in the first three games, but if they stick to this idea, they will need to be very focused, calling for the Barcelona striker to have a splendid night and the French to have a night of terror.

In 1982, these two met for third place in the World Cup in Spain, with the Poles winning. This match, together with Portugal vs. Switzerland, guarantees the European presence in the quarterfinals. Also, this match will have a Venezuelan touch, provided by Jesús Valenzuela, Jorge Urrego and Tulio Moreno. Do you recognize them? Well, they are the same referees we saw in England vs. the United States. They will be back to officiate this time, and we hope they have a good night, and that they will be in the photos but not the protagonists of the match.

<center><h1> MARRUECOS vs. ESPAÑA  </h1></center>

**MARRUECOS** terminó en el primer lugar del grupo F, donde algunos habían predicho que estaría Croacia o Belgica. Pero al empatar a 0 frente al primero de ellos y luego vencer al segundo, los marroquíes llegaron al tercer partido practicamente clasificados. Y lograron ganar a la aguerrida Canadá. Es uno de los cinco equipos que sólo permitió un gol en sus tres encuentros: Brasil, Croacia, Estados Unidos y Túnez, siendo el último el único que fue eliminado en la fase de grupo a pesar de ésta estadística favorable. ** Ziyech** es la principal estrella ofensiva que tienen los africanos, mientras que el del PSG, **Hakimi** también tiene sus importantes funciones para defender y acompañar en el desborde cuando el equipo ataca. **En-Nesyri** vuelve a ponerse la camiseta de la selección que una vez vistió en el mundial de Rusia hace cuatro años y sigue contribuyendo de forma eficiente al juego colectivo. Todos están contentos por haber terminado de primeros de grupo. Pero precisamente por eso les ha tocado a España como rival. ¿Hubiese sido mejor terminar de segundos para enfrentar a Japon en octavos de final?

**ESPAÑA** es otra de las selecciones que se esperaba que llegara a los duelos directos. Con una plantilla de dieciocho jugadores dentro de La Liga y cinco trabajando en la Premier League, los ibericos hicieron varias rotaciones de jugadores para su tercer encuentro y no se vio tan bien como la primera presentación que tuvieron. Incluso, en ése encuentro frente a Japón estuvieron varios minutos fuera de la clasificación, gracias a las combinaciones de resultados que se dieron en simultáneo. Y volvieron a entrar en la clasificación gracias al marcador que finalmente quedó en el otro partido. Pero parece que el apoyo no ha disminuido a pesar de, no solo la derrota, sino la forma en la que fueron vencidos. Junto a los ingleses, es el equipo que más anotó en la fase de grupos, con nueve goles, sin embargo, permitió un gol más que el conjuno de los tres leones. España ha gustado por el juego orquestral que mostró en su primer encuentro, sin depender de ningún jugador en específico, todos entendiendo lo que hay que hacer y buscando no tener un protagonismo innecesario. Mi pregunta será: ¿cómo reaccionarán éste equipo cuando empiece por debajo en el marcador en algún encuentro? Puede que no le suceda en ésta oportunidad, pero ¿en las siguientes rondas? ¿Cómo suena para eso Portugal o Francia? Sin duda, hay que ir fortaleciendo el estómago.

En el mundial pasado estos dos conformaron el grupo B. Su encuentro empataron a dos goles. En-Nesyri es el único de esos goleadores que estará presente en éste nuevo encuentro. También estuvieron allí Hakimi, Ziyech y Saïss por los africanos. Y de los europeos repetirán Carvajal, Alba y Busquets. Por supuesto, no todos estarán de titulares, pero podrán agregar ésto a su curriculum.

**MOROCCO** finished first in Group F, where some had predicted Croatia or Belgium. But by drawing 0-0 against the former and then beating the latter, the Moroccans went into the third match virtually qualified. And they managed to beat the hard-fighting Canada. They are one of five teams to allow only one goal in their three matches: Brazil, Croatia, the United States and Tunisia, the latter being the only one to be eliminated in the group stage despite this favorable statistic. ** Ziyech** is the Africans' main offensive star, while PSG's **Hakimi** also has important roles to play in defending and accompanying the attack when the team attacks. **En-Nesyri** is back in the national team jersey he once wore at the World Cup in Russia four years ago and continues to contribute efficiently to the team's collective play. Everyone is happy to have finished top of the group. Would it have been better to finish second and face Japan in the round of 16?

**SPAIN** is another team that was expected to reach the direct duels. With a squad of eighteen players in La Liga and five working in the Premier League, the Iberians made several player rotations for their third match and did not look as good as their first performance. In that match against Japan, they even spent several minutes out of qualification, thanks to a combination of results that happened at the same time. And they got back into the qualification thanks to the score that was finally left in the other match. But it seems that the support has not waned despite, not only the defeat, but the manner in which they were beaten. Together with the English, they are the team that scored the most goals in the group stage, with nine goals, but they allowed one more goal than the three lions. Spain liked the orchestrated play they showed in their first match, without relying on any specific player, all of them understanding what they have to do and trying not to have unnecessary protagonism. My question will be: how will this team react when they start behind in a game? It may not happen this time, but in the following rounds, how does Portugal or France sound for that? No doubt, you have to strengthen your stomach.

In the last World Cup these two made up Group B. They played to a two-goal draw. En-Nesyri is the only one of those strikers who will be present in this new encounter. Hakimi, Ziyech and Saïss were also there for the Africans. And for the Europeans, Carvajal, Alba and Busquets will be back. Of course, not all of them will be in the starting lineup, but they will be able to add this to their resume.

**BRASIL** fue otros de los grandes que decidió rotar su plantilla para el tercer partido en vista de su pase seguro a la fase de eliminación directa. Un equipo casi totalmente nuevo presentó ante los africanos y no pudo vencer. No sólo eso, sino que tampoco pudo marcar. Nadie puede poner en duda la calidad que puso en el terreno de juego los cariocas, pero ésta vez no le salió bien. Con unos 21 disparos (7 al arco) y un 65% de posesión del balón no fue suficiente para superar a Camerún. Polonia y Estados Unidos estan en octavos de final con apenas dos goles marcados. También Australia y Brasil han pasado marcando sólo tres goles. Éstos cuatro son los que menos goles han marcado del grupo selecto de 16 equipos. ¿Es éste el nivel ofensivo de Brasil para éste mundial? Quizás algunos les guste decir que se debe a la ausencia de Neymar. Yo no compartiría esa teoría, en vista que este equipo tiene muchas herramientas y virtudes, colectivas e individuales para ser candidato. ¿Se le puede atribuir al calendario especial que tiene el campeonato? Apenas con unos días de haberse separado de sus clubes en diferentes países se han puesto la camiseta de la selección y juegan con unos compañeros diferentes. Lo cierto es que ya no hay margen de error, y el lunes deberán encarar a un equipo que no pudo ser vencido por los favoritos del grupo H.

**COREA DEL SUR** pasó a los octavos de final por muy poca diferencia con Uruguay. Ya en el tiempo añadido frente a Portugal, los coreanos pudieron ganar en un certero contraataque, llevándose los tres puntos y adueñándose del segundo lugar. De seguro habían previsto que deberían llegar con unos tres o cuatro puntos a éste encuentro y no depender tanto de la victoria ante los lusos. Pero llegaron con un sólo punto, y era lo que le tocaba hacer para clasificar: ganarle a Portugal. ¡Y lo lograron! Junto con el grupo C y E, este grupo H definió su segundo lugar por diferencia de goles, ya que un segundo equipo tenía la misma cantidad de puntos y de diferencia de goles. **Son Heung-Min** era duda para jugar desde el inicio y logró estar presente en los tres encuentros.  Pero tendrán muy poco tiempo para celebrar, ya que ahora deberán enfrentar al país que más veces ha ganado ésta copa. Algo a considerar es que son uno de los cuatro equipos clasificados que más permitieron goles en la fase de grupo: 4 goles en contra. Los otros fueron Senegal, Australia y su compañera Portugal. No podrán darse el lujo de ser permisivos de ahora en adelante. Brasil de seguro volverá a alinearse con los que mejor nivel han tenido y de seguro no desaprovecharán las ocasiones con espacio. Se necesita la mejor versión de Corea en cuanto a orden y efectividad en el contraataque para poder optar por ser uno de los mejores ocho.

Nunca se han enfrentado en mundiales. Será la primera vez que ambos se enfrenten. Ésto no quiere decir que son unos completos desconocidos, porque Son y Richarlison comparten equipo en Inglaterra. Además, el coreano ha enfrentado a otros brasileños que militan en la Premier League. De seguro tendremos un partido con mucho vértigo.

**BRAZIL** was another of the big teams that decided to rotate its squad for the third match in view of its safe passage to the knockout stage. They fielded an almost entirely new team against the Africans and were unable to win. Not only that, but they also failed to score. Already in stoppage time against Portugal, the Koreans were able to win in an accurate counterattack, taking the three points and taking over second place. Surely they had anticipated that they should come into this match with three or four points and not depend so much on the victory over the Portuguese. But they arrived with only one point, and that was what they had to do to qualify: beat Portugal. And they did it! Along with group C and E, this group H defined its second place by goal difference, as a second team had the same amount of points and goal difference. **Son Heung-Min** was a doubt to play from the start and managed to be present in all three matches.  But they will have very little time to celebrate, as they will now have to face the country that has won this cup the most times. Something to consider is that they are one of the four qualified teams that allowed the most goals in the group stage: 4 goals conceded. The others were Senegal, Australia and their teammate Portugal. They will not be able to afford to be lax from now on. Brazil will surely line up again with their best players and they will certainly not miss chances in space. They will need the best version of Korea in terms of order and effectiveness on the counterattack to be in contention for a top eight finish.

They have never met in World Cups. This will be the first time the two have met. This is not to say that they are complete strangers, because Son and Richarlison share a team in England. In addition, the Korean has faced other Brazilians who play in the Premier League. We are sure to have a match with a lot of vertigo.

**LUKA MODRIC** posiblemente esté en su último mundial.  Fue titular en todos los partidos que disputó Croacia en el Mundial de Rusia 2018 y Brasil 2014, y lo ha sido también en todos los que va de su selección éste año. Aunque no ha podido anotar, no es su principal función. Sin embargo, se necesita que siga distribuyendo el juego, darle buen trato al balón y la posesión del mismo, a la vez que los demás también se hacen disponibles. Japón será otro rival duro. Luka lo sabe, ya que estuvo en la plantilla que los enfrentó la última vez en Alemania 2006, jugando doce minutos más el agregado. Modric es parte del mediocampo croata que necesita estar engranado y aceitado para poder pasar de ronda, y aunque no queremos adelantarnos a los hechos, Corea del Sur no es Brasil.

**LUKA MODRIC** is likely to be in his last World Cup.  He started every game Croatia played in the World Cup in Russia 2018 and Brazil 2014, and has also started every game for his national team this year. Deberán rotar, mejorar las estrategias, optimizar lo que se han mostrado débiles y fortalecer sus puntos fuertes. Empezaron los duelos directos. ¡Disfrutemos el futbol!**
