### **THESIS II: Ideology Has a Material Existence**
1. "Ideas" or "representations" which seem to make up ideology do not have an ideal (spiritual) existence but a material existence. 
2. The Ideal and Spiritual existence of 'ideas' arises exclusively in an ideology of the 'idea' and of ideology. 
*An ideology always exists in an apparatus, and its practice, or its practices. This existence is material. 

* Ideology = an imaginary relation to real relatoins. 

> An individual believes in God, or Duty, in Justice etc. This belief derives from the ideas of the individual concerned, i.e. from him as a subject with a consciousness which contains the ideas of his belief. In this way, as in by way of the means of the absolutely ideological 'conceptual' device set up ( a subject endowed with a consciousness in which he freely forms or freely recognizes ideas in which he believes), the material attitude of the subject naturally follows." 

## An Individual behaves in a way, adopts an attitude, participates in certain regular practices which are those of the ideological apparatus on which 'depend' the ideas which he has in all consciousness freely chosen as a subject. If he believes in God, he goes to Church to attend Mass; kneels, prays, confesses, does penance and naturally repents. If he believes in Duty he will have the corresponding attitudes, inscribed in ritual practices 'according to the correct principles.' If he believes in Justice, he will submit to the Law." pg 158-159
