Wilderness Journal 01 - Bugs get the better of me

The bugs were fucking awful. No seriously. I thought I knew what bad bugs were like. Previous experiences had left me covered head to toe in mozzies, black flies and those damn horse flies. My ears would swell up from the black flies and I would look pretty funny for a few weeks but I had grown accustomed to those pests. This was a whole new level ...

My first and biggest mistake was the fact that I thought camping in the centre of a marsh close to the lake was a good idea. Tons of wildlife, beautiful views and dark skies! Everything I could have dreamed of ...oh and 4 trillion bugs.

The evening was quite nice yeah there were a few mozzies around but other than that things were pretty darn nice. Once the sun fell is when the chaos ensued. I couldn't even open my mouth or I would be in inhaling the little fellers by the second. A breath through the nose and a few black flies would zip up there. If I turned my head lamp to the change my composition or do some light painting my head would be covered by moths in an instant.

Worst off was when I crawled into my sleeping bag to get some rest. Apparently, a few ticks had the same idea and decided to keep me warm. Luckily I could feel those little pricks crawling on my leg and was able to ride my pants and sleeping bag of those wee beasties.

Yep, that looks like a paradise for mosquitos and ticks. Wonderful photos! I like the way the foreground foliage is fuzzy, while the animals are in fine focus.
