At the Hackers Congress in Prague two guys stood out: Smuggler and Frank Braun. They gave several talks, participated in panels and starred in the documentary Down the Deep, Dark Web. You could easily recognise them as they wore masks all the time.

Why do you wear your masks?

Smuggler: As self-protection and as a statement. Self-protection against the always increasing CCTV surveillance and face recognition on each and any of us. At the moment methods are being developed worldwide to use camera networks for biometric tracking and to link them with other sensors and databases.

Opponents of this have but four options: Democratic processes, vandalism, resignation or self-protection. Since I don’t want to force my will on others, politics and vandalism are not an option. As a privacy extremist resignation is completely out of the question – indiduality, liberty and self-development which foot on privacy are too important. Which leaves self-protection – in this case, masking – to impede, distort and even partially evade data collection. It is, in effect, a self-imposed method of data thrift.

Frank Braun: In my opinion, privacy is a necessary precondition for liberty. And just as freedom, privacy is not granted to you. You have to make it happen yourself and always defend it. Times of extreme surveillance require extreme countermeasures, unfortunately. That‘s, why I became a privacy extremist and wear a mask in public.

Smuggler: To me, privacy means being able to choose under whose observation, judgement and social memory I stand – and whom I want to exclude from sustained social contact. This is no negative model of relationships, on the contrary. It opens new perspectives to selectively stress certain relationships, esteem and candor and stray from the masses. Thereby I separate myself and my counterpart from society at large. I’m not an Ayn Rand fan, but I’ll gladly quote her when she says: “Civilization is the progress towards a society of privacy. The savage‘s whole existence is public, ruled by the laws of his tribe. Civilization is the process of setting man free from men.”

Where do you buy your masks?

Smuggler: Motorcycle and outdoor shops.

Frank Braun: I prefer to buy them on the Internet. It gives me the best choice from a range of models.

What kind of masks do you prefer?

Frank Braun: So far I’ve made good experiences with surgery masks. They’re cheap, comfortable over longer periods and you can easily give one away to interested people.

Smuggler: I prefer so-called tube bandanas. They are easy to use and wash, breathable and quickly put on or off. Add a good pair of sunglasses and your disguise is complete!

What’s to consider when buying masks?

Frank Braun: Primarily comfort, and that you actually like the design.

Smuggler: A mask with a nosepiece suits eyeglass wearers, also when you want to add sunglasses. But masks are also an individualist expression. So, one has to put some thought of their own into it and develop their own style.

What has to happen before you take your masks off?

Frank Braun: Video surveillance of public spaces has to stop. At conferences like this one, a no-photo policy would have to be implemented and enforced. But for the time being, since we do not want to force this on anyone, we will stick with the personallly responsible solution of wearing masks.

Smuggler: There are too many people armed with cameras at this conference, but I don’t wear my mask at home or in a safe environment. The masks are not about never taking them off, but about reducing your data footprint. What we want is data economy, not data stinginess.

This interview was originally published in Blink Magazine 04 in January 2013.
