Nigeria is an important of mineral. The mineral include those found in the sedimentary rocks which are coal, petroleum (oil) and limestone. Those found within the basement complex rocks are tin and gold.

Coal: The only coal mine in West Africa is found at Enugu where mining began in 1915 after the construction of the railway from Port Harcourt. The peak of the production was In 1958. Since then there has been steady decline in demand for coal largely because of preference for oil and gas as a source of power and the change - over of railways from coal to diesel.

Tin and columbite : these two minerals are found together in alluvial deposits on the Jos plateau. Mining is concentrated on the southern part of Jos around bukuru ladi where the open cast method of mining is used. Tin and columbite were the first minerals mined and exported from Nigeria ;extraction started about 1933. Columbite is a rare ore. The metal obtained from it does not corrode and  will resist high temperature.

Petroleum and gas : This is the most important mineral of the Nigeria. It is found mainly in the Niger delta areas (mostly In rivers state and delta state) and in offshore locations petroleum account for about 90percent of Nigeria export earning. 
Petroleum is mined using DRILLING METHOD. 
pipes are drilled into the ground from surface structures called Derrick, and oil is forced out of the ground under pressure.

Importance of mining to Nigeria 
Foreign exchange, employment, technology transfer, urban development, infrastructural development, and raw raw materials.

Left to it's own devices, without colonial "help" Africa would be the power continent.
