I created a token on steem-engine.com!

A potentially rash purchase but a warm fuzzy feeling at the same time.  Can you guess the name of my token before scrolling down?

So I'd seen the [announcement post](https://steemit.com/steemengine/@aggroed/introducing-steem-engine-com) by @aggroed and noticed that Keychain was required.  As I'd not installed this browser extension yet, I thought I'd kill two birds with one stone and find out more about both, by doing stuff.

The first thing I noticed and like is that both Steem Keychain ([introductory post](https://steemit.com/steem/@yabapmatt/hate-putting-private-keys-into-websites-introducing-steem-keychain)) and the www.steem-engine.com site are fairly straight-forward to navigate, with big icons and large font.  This stuff is all new to me and the simple layouts is definitely more approachable than a bunch of menus with techie stuff going on.

It was quite simple to create a login password for Keychain (available from Chrome store), and then add my private posting, and private active keys in for wallet transactions, and I like that I now have a '1 click' option to view my Voting Power and Resource Credits (to remind me to go claim an account).

At present, there are around 30 tokens listed, and it looks to me like a little bit of 'parking' and name grabbing has been going on.  Mr Roeland P the issuer of symbol 'BTC', token name 'Bitcoin' :)  Exyle has gone for the selfie approach and created 'Exyle' token, and there are also tokens for STEEM and SBD.

See what I mean about the simple looking layout, I am a fan.  Hopefully this will roll onto the Market for exchanging tokens when it arrives 'soon'.  You could have used 'shortly' there guys :)

Although the layout is simple, I still contacted the team to ask on the best approach for 'Decimal Precision' and 'Max Supply'.  I went for 3 (same as STEEM), and 1 million, because, why not?!

Oh yeah, the creation of a token will cost 100 STEEM - it is currently 100 ENG, and 1 ENG is 1 STEEM.  I am told that this will most likely change in the future.

On clicking submit, there are some contact details to fill out, including a website address.  I don't have a site and so used my steemit.com profile address - this can be changed later.

I had to :)

Before seeing the list of tokens, I had 'ENG' in mind as the token symbol for the Engagement Token.  It made me laugh when I saw that this is the symbol for Steem Engine Token - dammit!

I have issued 0 ENGAGE tokens at present and read that it is possible to issue the whole lot at once (1 million in my case), or issue them in batches.  I'm not sure if it matters, or what the reasons would be to choose each option - maybe you can help in the comments?

I'm under no illusion that there is a good chance that my ENGAGE tokens will never be worth anything, but I have this dream that the most engaged people on our network should be rewarded with such a token - perhaps only as some sort of badge of honour for now.

Okay, maybe a stupid question, but do I need a different wallet than the steem wallet to see or get the tokens if and when you ever issue or drop them to people? Do you have an "Engage" wallet? I really do not know much at all about cryptocurrencies and how to make them work. I figured I would figure that out in a little over 5 years, but now it is looking more and more like I really need to buckle down and figure out this wallet thing.

"Badge of Honor" seems like a fine enough reason for a token... but who knows? 

I guess I have always thought SMTs and other "private tokens" were a bit questionable because WHAT exactly gives them "value?" Seems "value" would be derived from having something — *anything* — be tradeable for *"real life goods and services"* in some way. 

In the case of the engagement leagues we're all a somewhat *competitive* bunch (I think...) so "value" of a token can perhaps best be measured as some type of "brownie points" for doing specific tasks, and (eventually) take on a *small* monetary value as somehow "exchangeable" for upvotes. Or something.

Just thinking out loud, really...

If you did the release in batches you could do something like max tokens = 100% upvote from you, so that if there were only 100 tokens in existance giving you 50 tokens would be a 50% upvote, but if another 100 tokens were released a month later those same tokens would only be worth 25% upvote.

When talking smts ive curently wondered what would give them value. The only one that comes to mind is magic tokens as the more magic you own the more dividends you receive.

Badge of honor works for me. I was just throwing out an idea.

The other idea that you just gave me once communities are developed they could be used to unlock certain features like on twitch if you subscribe to a streamer some have unlockable emoticons. I was thinking along the lines of unlocking achievements as well like when playing video games except achievments for # of tokens helps. More of a badge of honor as well. Maybe something steemitboard could offer one day in the future.

Haha I remember we were talking at the Hevré in Kraków and I was joking around saying I would create a @jeffjagoe coin that I would disperse to people based on their upvotes on my posts..... now @aggroed and @yapabmatt made it way too easy and possible for that to became a reality.... but for now I will stick to issuing STEEM Food Tokens (FOOD) for participants in my weekly restaurant review contest :D

Weldone, Ash. As a collector myself, do well to send some my way...

I think tokens are a great way to foster engagement. Just look at SteemHunt. I believe that with more recognized token issuers using easy-to-earn tokens to incentivize a community of Steem users for engagement apart from just the Steem coin, we could witness a massive boost in engagement on every side here. And believe it or not, with a free market in the works, the community can decide just how valuable the tokens are. 

There is a good chance that the Engagement league might just get stronger attention and support should you think about applying this.

It was certainly in my thoughts when I created the token.  A weekly issuance for placing in the league is definitely an option.  For now though, I think people would prefer the STEEM :)
