Not so @smartsteem: Transparency and adherence to rules required?
> The keys to brand success are self-definition, transparency, authenticity and accountability. - Simon Mainwaring
####
Absolutely. And with Blockchain technology, businesses and organisations will either offer full transparency and compete, or fail if they cannot do so.

![image.png](https://gateway.ipfs.io/ipfs/QmVHxnQEfzYDnyDLEymmuzvpjigXskhARaJJmoyiL9y6ie)

-----------------------------------------

## Background
##
Yesterday morning (UTC), technical issues made Steemit.com and other sites using api.steemit.com inaccessible, or out of sync - my feed was 2 weeks old, I'd lost a few 100 followers, and my Wallet looked suspiciously lighter.

steemitstage.com though was up and running, and so a couple of savvy users were still pushing out content via this interface. It was here where I noticed [this post](https://steemit.com/steemit/@therealwolf/did-we-develop-a-time-machine), and this is the focus of my blog today.

The post above, written by the developer of @smartsteem, received a vote from @smartsteem soon after creation. While other Bid-bot owners have stated they do not use their own service in this manner, I do not see an problem with doing so, as long as they adhere to the same rules as everyone else.

There are two reasons that I feel this bid and post, do not adhere to rules laid out on https://smartsteem.com or provide the transparency required in order to maintain the high level of trust required when dealing in financial transactions.

## Where is the bid?
##

A quick scan through the bidders wallet https://steemit.com/@therealwolf/transfers shows no sign of a transfer to @smartsteem with the memo of the post in question, and yet we can see a 20% vote from @smartsteem in the voters list:

![image.png](https://gateway.ipfs.io/ipfs/QmSRsrGzJ8y2Tjbh7sHpxDoquBiGxp7t2Uj1i4dfm51Yuu)

I wished to gain more insight into this, and following our initial exchange of 'pleasantries', offered the following questions to the poster:

![image.png](https://gateway.ipfs.io/ipfs/QmUK1pJccqVRZDgWcCqfv1jwUcSHGgbH86rKNnFmmupyvX)

The response was a little techie and unclear as you will see, but i think the summary of it is: I voted manually and at around 5 minutes.

![image.png](https://gateway.ipfs.io/ipfs/QmUvHp4vpyyJ41nrFRpRTdRW6pVk9yyrS3Y2EKn8rSn2bF)

The problem here is that neither of these options are possible for the customers of this 'service'. More on this shortly, but for now, where is the bid?
####
![image.png](https://gateway.ipfs.io/ipfs/QmXoP7mruxmBqiGwsoFnzTkhDRxjoV8NffSWES4BMrD48T)
####
![image.png](https://gateway.ipfs.io/ipfs/QmT7bGfdEh2dZqAr4WGUoB6qb8izHDY6nDJ24AUgPMgvhz)
####
At this point, I am starting to wonder who the real customer is, and if my question is not being understood properly. And so I asked again:
####
![image.png](https://gateway.ipfs.io/ipfs/QmX6far8pMWmLHW2Hxxd3Jjp7raVAMF8G5KNjrd2WMmn3o)

The question is quite straight-forward, and I don't think it is unfair to ask for some clarity. Here is the response:
####
![image.png](https://gateway.ipfs.io/ipfs/QmTUKqsiWrxpYU45oTXMA9A1xgFPV2dyZQ9xMMNDP6hwcb)
####
Numerous points to be noted here I feel.

- Who is the customer in @therealwolf's eyes?

- Where is the simple screenshot from any of the tools at our disposal which show the bid amount sent to @smartsteem?

- An abusive tone, and not for the first time
##
The summary of this is that a bid was not made under normal circumstances, nor is it clear how much was paid.

**This is a financial transaction involving (although not exclusively using) Blockchain technology - everything should be in plain sight.**

## What about the 30 minute post age rule?
##

On the home page of smartsteem.com, the following text is displayed:

![bid4vote30.PNG](https://gateway.ipfs.io/ipfs/QmeJUbSZdsABptofbweH6ddy7PnLEHDu7nYqxpB8igiefb)

A 30 minute 'age of post' rule is present - Votes will not be cast before this time.

One of the positive features of this rule is to allow curators to be able to pick up some rewards on the post - a large early vote increases the author rewards percentage substantially, by reducing the curation rewards percentage.

#### And so what was the time of this bid which added $67 to the value of the post?
####
Post created: 10:42:27
Smartsteem vote: 10:44:09

![vote-time.PNG](https://gateway.ipfs.io/ipfs/Qmcfjf62QJJXeDz9cgoa3zsj1ZDQo4Eva5kQ9ZgZrk41gY)

I make that a minute and 42 seconds after the post was created and clearly, this is not in line with the rules stated on the www.smartsteem.com homepage.

In addition to the issue of a business not adhering to its own rules whilst lacking transparency, this early vote has reduced the curation rewards of all the users who trusted @therealwolf enough to be producing quality content and sticking to the rules regarding bots - particularly his own.

## Conclusions
##

- There is still no visible proof that STEEM/SBD was sent to @smartsteem. Even if the money is going from 'one hand to the other', for transparency this transaction should be visible to all.
####
- A simple and clearly stated rule was broken which has allowed for an increased pull of the rewards of the post to the owner, away from the curators.
####
- The response focuses on the @smartsteem delegators, as if they are the only customers that should be offered transparency.
####
- The tone and use of language towards me whilst I inquired and asked politely for information was not of a person I wish to do business with, or support
####
**This episode has left me with enough reason not to consider a vote for @therealwolf as a Steem witness.**

Part of me is unsure if this is simply lack of understanding in having proper separation of personal assets and accounts with business assets and accounts.

![refund.png](https://steemitimages.com/DQmXq56ALwaEsNu1rnBmM4GrcqwTTfiEAJbHKnqSNo9NSPh/refund.png)

A CEO/employee of a company should never be sending themselves fund to refund/reimburse clients from their own personal bank account. If an A CEO/employee of a company was trying to refund me from their own personal bank account opposite to a corporate bank account I would be rather suspicious. This is not the first time either. While I can understand why a startup’s CEO tends to do this it is something I would hope a more mature project/company would reframe from doing.

I can only hope moving forward that if refunds are not being processed by the main business account for whatever reason than a separate account that only handles refunds/payment issues for that service is established and used to deal with overflow/failure to auto-refund/other issues. This would be increasingly needed if the person starts to operate further down the road other projects as well.

 It might also be a good idea for them to look at their own internal policy’s regarding owner or employees being able to use there internal system to vote. CEO’s always have to be extra careful and include transparency in what they are doing. Otherwise issues tend to rise. Sending funds over our blockchain is one heck of transparency that can be easily audited by anyone from the outside.

I don’t know those sounds like rookie numbers to be. Got least push that up to 10 digits of monthly profit by end of Q3. Otherwise we just got offshore the entire blockchain to swamps of Georgia. It's just out of my hands ;)

Good idea - I will create a separate account from where the refunds will be made, but there is a reason why I decided to refund them directly from my account:

Having an account with over 1.7 Million Steempower and daily volume of thousands of dollars is no joke and requires special care - so I try to minimize the amount of logins I do to that account as much as possible.

Hmm...

First of all, thank you @abh12345. I appreciate the insight and as always, your intentions. I think this is an important thing to shed some light upon.

My guess is that **most** of the people using smartsteem has **no clue** about databases or how to extract information from the blockchain like you guys are doing on a frequent basis.

Due to that, I would've liked to see the response from the owner of this service more *"properly"* so to speak.

However, another guess of mine, is that you and the owner of this service have been arguing and debating certain aspects of this service on more than a handful occasions already, which I believe could be the answer for the lack of response or the rather "impolite" answer.

That being said, I still wish the answer would've been different as it would've looked better in the eyes of *others* to have a normal, polite dialog.

Also, I have no database or blockchain experience myself, but I suppose it **should** be possible to extract some sort of evidence, even if you can't send a transfer on Steemit? - If that is possible, that would've been the easiest and probably the best thing to do. For transparency reasons.

---

I will **not** remove my witness vote for either of you, because your internal *"fight"* or disagreements are not something I as a voter should have to consider. I don't want to pick a side, and there shouldn't be any reasons for me to choose sides between two different witnesses.

I vote for my own personal reasons, and don't want to base my votes upon arguements and disagreements between different witnesses.

However, whenever you (both of you) openly argue, discuss or debate certain aspects of this particular service, intentions, ROI, rules or whatever it might be, you pretty much **force** people to pick a side based on **your** experience and feelings. - Even if that's **not** your intentions when you're writing the things you do.

- And I personally believe that's the **wrong** thing to do.

---

There's no reason for all the witnesses to agree with each other or their intentions, motives or actions, but I think it would be better to keep these sort of things locked away from the regular Steemit users. I cannot see the reason for one witness to attack another one, openly, which seems to be more or less the outcome of any of the interactions you two are having with each other.

I wouldn't feel the same if you talked about these things as **users** instead of **witnesses**. While you're doing it like witnesses, it pretty much feels like a "witness-war" where I'll be forced to pick a side.

Understood.

If the community doesn't seek clarity and honesty, I will turn more of a blind eye to this sort of behavior and not talk about it where others who feel 'forced' into picking a side can see it.

> I wouldn't feel the same if you talked about these things as users instead of witnesses.

I'll head to the beach where I can think about what is more important to me, being a witness or being a user that cares. I didn't realise I could not be both.

I am all for transparency, and I always like your contributions and different analysis. This one too, actually. And I like your contributions because I truly believe that both honesty and clarity is vital. - Especially in terms of witnesses.

What I don't like with this particular subject, is just the fact that it starts to look like a "witness-war" to me. One "attacking" the other, the other defends himself and counter-attack. And back and forth. Very similar to any of the whale-wars we've seen.

That is what I personally feel is putting extra unnecessary pressure on regular users who're looking for good witnesses to vote for. Because both of you are witnesses, and these sort of actions and/or feelings reflects you as a witness.

However, I do not believe that these are your intentions while writing or replying to these sort of posts, but I do believe that it is, or becoming, a side-effect of the outcome.

That being said, this is only my own personal opinion.

Do you know what the worst thing is?

This whole fight is wasting precious time I could invest in things that truly matter for the blockchain - e.g. my newest project.

But no: it seems that witness @abh12345 find's it more important to stir up drama for the sake of drama.

You know @abh12345 - why are you even advertising for you witness with his post?

Is that really what a witness should do? Waste time creating drama instead of working on projects that improve Steem?

And to be honest @hitmeasap - I'm done fighting and wasting time.

I will ignore any more attempts from abh and his gang.

While it does hurt me to read lies about myself and the service I've put sweat and tears in building for the last 8 months - I rather show my supporters that they did the right thing voting me than trying to argue with someone who has a personal problem with me.

As a person who've been working alongside with @abh12345 as an SOG, I really doubt that he is trying to stir up drama just for the sake of drama.

I do believe that he is trying to share what he believes is valuable content and information in each analysis and report he does, and I appreciate those efforts and contributions. I am all for transparency and I don't mind people sharing details regarding certain subjects with that in mind.

However, what bothers me a bit with this particular subject, is that it seems like you are often defending your actions and intentions meanwhile he continues to question your motives and behaviour. In one way or another... Which ultimately result in an never-ending witness-war.

As you both are witnesses and often speak as witnesses instead of regular users, this also puts unnecessary pressure on regular users who're looking for decent witnesses to vote for.

That is why I'd prefer if you didn't brought these sort of things up in public, as it often, or most likely, will result in a continuous *"fight"* between you.

I'll keep on saying this till everyone gets to see it....

STEEMIT WILL GET MUCH BETTER IF WE PUT AN END TO BIDBOTS AND BIDBOT OWNERS, THE HARM CAUSED IS MORE THAN THE INTENDED GOOD, THAT IS IF THERE WAS ANY GOOD PURPOSE FOR IT IN THE FIRST PLACE.

THE LEVEL OF CORRUPTION AND OPPRESSION THIS HAS BROUGHT IS UNDENIABLE. I AM ACTUALLY TYPING THESE IN CAPITAL LETTERS TO SHOW HOW SERIOUS THIS MATTER IS.

ANYONE WHO SUPPORT ALL THESE MALPRACTICES CAN EQUALLY SUPPORT TERRORISM.

HOW LONG WILL WE CONTINUE TO WATCH THE COMMUNITY GET TORN DOWN BY GREED AND CORRUPTION?

Thank you @abh12345, for drawing our attention to this

Following up with your post and conversation with therealwolf , I thinks there are some underground shitty things happening on smartsteem. Their voting bot is not transparent

having access to blockchain data makes everything more transparent. its sad when people try to game the system but it seem here on steemit, the more someone has, the more they will try and game things.

I have never been a fan of bidbots. I do very much encourage entrepreneurship and when these bots started to appear, I did think, well that's entrepreneurial spirit but I was also aware that in reality the only person to win, was the bidbot owners

Now @smartsteem are using their own bot that others have to pay for. Not only are the profiting from the bids. This is not entrepreneurial spirit, but very scam like behavior.

another bot, bot owner and witness just lost my respect....

take a look at most of the bot owners, they cap the gains (some without even telling you)... I work in the financial sector and if people could lost their shirt but were limited to 10% on gains, that exchange would go out of business... Same thing will happen here at some point... Soon people will realize that they are overpaying, or worse get tired of it and go away, and then these bot owners will have to change their deals. I hope people remember who was who during this time. I don't care if someone wants to make a profit, but don't pretend to be on the side of the community (or people)... These guys are almost to a person, boughtt and paid for by the whales doing their bidding. They are the middlemen taking their small slice to enable the pigs to gorge at the trough.

Hence the continued focus on the delegators in many replies.

They don't care about the bidders, it's just a matter of keeping the large delegator happy.

And if that means breaking the rules listed on your website, and sending non-visible bids, then so be it.

So true! Unfortunately, I don't think we have much of a future as a community if people keep delegating their SP to bots. I wish I had more SP to push your comment back to the top as it was but hey you will just have to settle for my few cents ;)

All delegators to smartsteem have been paid accordingly - and of course this isn't shown on the blockchain because it happened internally in a database.

I never said delegators were not paid, however the actions here break the rules as laid down by smartsteem.

How can you justify that it is okay for you to break the rules that you set? Answer that question honestly

<h2>Update:</h2>

I'm standing 110% behind what I said and to show everyone that the payment has been done internally, I've copied out and summarized the part of the code that does exactly that.

Now - this is as far as I will go to *proof* that I'm a man of my word and when I say that I'm paying for the v ote I bought myself, that I mean it!

```
try {
    /*
    let asset = SBD or STEEM
    let weight = custom weight
    let author = custom author
    let permlink = custom permlink
    */
    // Get Post
    let post = await get_post(author, permlink)
    // Get curation
    let curation = calc_curation(post.created)
    // Calc the ratio to pay based on USD price of STEEM & SBD - 2nd argument is the wanted ROI (0% in this case), which is undefined in a normal bid-round
    let ratio = calc_ratio(curation, 0)
    // Get account data from blockchain
    let account = await get_account('smartsteem')
    // Calculate current votingpower
    let vp = await calc_voting_power('smartsteem', account)
    // Calculate current vote_value
    let vote_value = await calc_vote_value_from_account('smartsteem', vp, weight, 'SBD', dynamic.reward_fund, dynamic.reward_fund_claims, dynamic.sbd_price, account)
    // How much the vote is going to cost
    ratio = vote_value / ratio
    // Vote on Post
    let result = await vote(author, permlink, weight, true, 'smartsteem')
    if (result) {
      // Paying out delegators
      for (let delegator of await get_all_delegators()) {
        // Custom share for delegators based on profit_share - 0.95 are the 95% profit shares
        let share = (ratio * 0.95) * (delegator.profit_shares / 100)
        // Either round on 3 dec after comma or 8 based on if the amount >= 0.001 SBD / STEEM
        share = share >= 0.001 ? round(share) : __round(share, 8)
        // If asset is SBD => add to sbd pending profit
        if (asset === 'SBD') {
          delegator.pending_profit += share
          total_pending_profit += share
        // If asset is STEEM => add to steem pending profit
        } else {
          delegator.pending_profit_steem += share
          total_pending_profit_steem += share
        }
        // Saving delegator
        await delegator.save()
      }
    }
  } catch (error) {
    console.error(error)
  }
```

The sponsor payout is then updated for https://smartsteem.com/delegators

---

You're the biggest vulture there is on steem, @abh12345.

Let me tell you something: I will not give into bullying and false facts.

I paid for my bought vote internally - which was added to the delegators revenue inside the database.

There was no time to send it as transfer because blocks were not synced due to node-problems.

> One of the positive features of this rule is to allow curators to be able to pick up some rewards on the post - a large early vote increases the author rewards percentage substantially, by reducing the curation rewards percentage.

That is YOUR reason why we introduced the curation limit - not mine or smartsteems!

The 30 minute rule is to make sure that bidders can calculate accordingly. Otherwise some users will bid right at the end of a bid-round and destroy the whole round for everyone else.

The code for the manual vote is smart enough to calculate that an earlier vote results in a higher vote-price due to less curation.

Which means: **delegators received even more money from the manual vote**.

---

To everyone else who reads this:

Are you really going to support a bully who is straight up disliking the fact that I'm running the most caring voting-service & bid-bot?

Smartsteem is paying out 95% of the profit. (smartsteem.com/delegators).

Payouts are once per day - on the blockchain. (https://steemd.com/@smartsteem)

The rest is happening behind the scenes in a database.

I have never and will never give myself free votes from smartsteem without payout delegators.

---

PS: I will remove the self vote before the end of the payout (but only if there are no downvotes which I need to counter). This vote is simply for visibility reasons.

Where can the community see this? How much did you pay?

> There was no time to send it as transfer because blocks were not synced due to node-problems.

Bullshit. You did not wait 30 minutes and so cannot say 'there was no time' or predict 28 minutes into the future that the nodes would not be synced.

> That is YOUR reason why we introduced the curation limit - not mine or smartsteems!

Wrong. I said it was a feature. You exploited a rule stated on your website which has cost your friends and auto-voters curation rewards.

> Which means: delegators received even more money from the manual vote.

The focus is not on your delegator customers, I'm sure they are very happy with your maximisation of reward pool rape, sending this bid to 'promote' your post to the few actually accessing the Blockchain at this time.

We seek transparency and clarity, not the opposite. We as witnesses, must try to do as honest a job as possible, and what you did yesterday is not even close.

The database is internal. Period.

> Bullshit. You did not wait 30 minutes and so cannot say 'there was no time' or predict 28 minutes into the future that the nodes would not be synced.

My guess was that it would be even longer out of sync and additionally - it took afterwards about an hour to get back on track with current blocks.

> Wrong. I said it was a feature. You exploited a rule stated on your website which has cost your friends and auto-voters curation rewards.

A rule to make sure that people get what they paid for. I got a 0% ROI vote - which is pretty fair for everyone.

I'm very, very transparent - go ahead look at my recent witness updates. Everytime I lost a block or my server crashed - I immediatialy made sure to inform everyone.

He's not a bully. He's a watch dog. Every industry has their watch dogs. It seems like your company could use a PR guy.

Last time I heard some call someone a bully was in grade school. Grow up and learn to take some criticism.

Do you pay for your votes. It's not a matter of if you payout the delegators but if you paid for the vote to begin with.

That block of code you linked shows no proof at all you actually paid for the vote. That is what it comes down to. You keep getting asked for proof showing you did pay, and you keep saying you control it internally, without actually showing any proof you have.

If there is proof, provide it. If there isn't, don't keep pushing forth non-proof as if it is.

Indeed.

I've given up on this, but I'm glad others can see so easily what these responses provide!

There seems to be at least one further instance where this 'invisible' bid took place, and further occasions (after the 30 minute rule was imposed), that votes were made prior to 30 minutes.

@xomegax ·
Oh i see it seems that he really doesnt show transparency on his bid bot its really unfair to others and its sad that to get to the trending in steemit we have to use bidbots
Like the @ifc doesnt use any bid bots but its a great community but a person can just use bid bots and just overtake the ifc(which is whats happening now with a person making the steemit decantalon which shows plagarism in some of the original content in the ifc)
