Hey everyone, how's it going? How many of you were born before 2000 and were mature enough by the year 2000? I know these people who I'm addressing are old enough and I doubt any of that age are actually here but putting the word out there nonetheless. And I'm talking about these people because in the turn of the millennia there was a famous computer situation. And I’m talking about the Y2K bug. This situation was all the rage at that time. People ran wild with their imaginations and a lot of people took advantage of a lot of people. Nonetheless, there were some genuine threats as well. A lot of money could have been transferred here and there. And many technologies and machineries could have ended up malfunctioning. It would have been something very destructive but we avoided it. But I believe we should still look into it for some explanation as to why it could have happened.

So I will not go into details of the exact situation because that would require a lot of computer talk which is quite nerdy and I don't want to put you through that. I will communicate in English and talk about the real world situations that could have happened. So  computers were designed in a way to store maximum data in the at least required storage. That is the system still relevant today. So, generally speaking, if you can determine the current year by the last two digits and you can remove the first two digits, in that case that was 19, you would save a lot of space on your computer's memory. That was a really big deal. It was considered a relatively good optimization towards better computing, but the beginning of the year column was static. It would mean after 1999 came 1900. I believe you can make some assumption as to what could have happened if 1999 turned to 1900. Computers would stop functioning. Computerized account calculations would calculate the wrong amount of money and might transfer money from one place to another inappropriately power plants and other technologies of the time such as space exploration could have been harmed greatly by this phenomena. Computers will basically lose their senses. Computers have taken over a lot of our lives in today's world. But it also was a very integral part of technology and innovation back in that time as well. Additionally, the problem was people back then knew relatively less about computers and these problems. So this computer bug was resonated into religious and natural catastrophic descriptions just to make a buck out of it. People spun the story in so many ways, but sometimes the story deviated largely from the truth.

Thankfully the boat was solved by a joint effort of the USSR and the USA. At that time there was a threat of another such bug in the year 2038. But since we have moved from 32-bit architectures to 64-bit, that threat has been postponed by at least 2 billion years.
