Why not using ISO 2 letter code as tag?
Spanish = es
Chinese = cn
[...]

The ISO 2 letter code is intended for a country and not a language. As an example, you can call Portugal, with the code PT here. However, one also speaks Portuguese in Brazil. Therefore, it makes more sense to tag the language and not the country.

Not really. ISO-639-1 is for languages. PT is for Portuguese, that is both spoken in Portugal and Brazil.

ISO 2 letter code :
Portugal = PT
Brazil =  BR
So i think it is better to Tag the languege and not the country with the ISO-Code.
If you writing about country, it is good to call the tag of the country in the written language or the ISO-Code from the country of this.
