I've tried different approaches, depending on the background of the person i'm talking to.  

Stuff that sweat-coin app, there's one on Steem and I can pay you way more on my own!

Blockchain is the future, it's going to disrupt everything! (with video included).  

It is hard going, even with constant hand-holding.  I'll try again next month when I move to a place there are actually people :)

Mmmm I’ve tried the whole get paid for content thing but seeing that people are still very suspicious and the fact that Steem needs more investors I came up with this sarcastic towards Instagram one recently:

 “Steem is similar to Instagram, you can buy likes and followers, but instead of paying it to a third party you can keep the money as your own invested stake.”

I've told them it's a blockchain which is mostly used for different social media platforms like a blogging platform and something for photos, videos etc. and at best you might be able to earn a little bit while doing something you enjoy without censorship.

Haven't worked so far. I don't want to share my identity on Steem for most people and the ones I'm sharing it with are mostly less social people.

One day a little fairy came to me; tiny, sweet and with a luminous golden light aura. She said, I should follow her into the hidden land called Steemit. Steem is a decentralized platform, which give you possibility to earn money, when you make good content. Is great alternative for centralized social media and much better to be part of great community. There is no hate, people love each other. You can get big upvotes for making great content and you can support other great creators with your votes and curation trials. It's amazing!

Hey, you know that time you ranted on Facebook and you got in a huge fight with your cousin's husband?  How would you like to rant anonymously, fight with strangers and have non-awkward Christmas dinners forever more?

Well, I have done this many times already. Not all are interested to hear but there are moments when one listens to my raving of it.  I say, "It's like Facebook on a more intelligent level. It is my bank, side business, retirement fund, and wonderful social media that grant variety almost in a limitless way. I tell them that it has converted the centralized apps we all use on the daily, into a Decentralized platform and income and livelyhood that creates a structure of oneself as a resume for the rest of ones life.

Steemit: Come for the interactions/community, stay for the drama/popcorn. Oh, and make some cryptocurrency or something...

It depends rather a lot on who I am talking to... which *mostly* means *explain this as you would to a 7-year old,* or *"explain this as you would to my grandma."*

In "general" my pitch goes something like *"Steem is a social content environment similar to what you'd get if you combined Facebook, Instagram, twitter, YouTube, SoundCloud, Pinterest, WordPress and a few others under a single umbrella... but UNlike all of the above which have a big central corporation that makes money off your efforts, with Steem YOU have the opportunity to be rewarded for your efforts and even become part 'owner' in the system you are part of, a bit like a co-op."*

I don't even *touch* on blockchains or cryptos and all that *unless* we get to the *"Cool! Tell me more!"* stage. If there's no follow-up, I just want them to take away a simple street-level explanation that might stick with them till the next time they see/hear the word *"Steem."*

Steem is a place where one can put money in to control inflation.

It seeks to be a place where users can work for tips.  (POB)

Steem is a republic.  We elect and trust witnesses for security. 

DPOS is the only system with account recovery.

Steem makes you the co-owner of the social web that you help create where users decide who adds value to the platform they share.

I have mixed emotions about Steem at the current moment. 

In one sense, I see some major advancements in a positive direction right now, and there has never been a shortage happenings that touch my heart. A great example would be @dfacademy, check out those kids working hard to achieve a dream. This is just one example of what Steem has to offer to the world. 

On the other hand, I still see much of the same flag wars and backwards thinking that has kept Steem in a rut for so long, as well as really hard working Steemian's that seem to go unrecognized by bigger accounts. Of course, there is no true measure for what one might consider "quality" right? Because it's relative and based on personal perception, but when you are also perceptive yourself, and able to see tight knit groups that seemingly ignore the hard working small guys, it leaves a bitter taste. Do I have a bitter taste about Steem right now, and seeing quality posters not earn what I think they should? Yes I do. Have I busted my ass here enough to have earned the right to say it? Absolutely.

I use the simplest relatable term to invite people to steemit. Some folks might say using money to lure them is not good for the steem ecosystem in the long run but I still think it is the best approach. Money is a language understood by even the dumbest of humans. Inviting people to steemit and inviting a potential investor to invest in steem are two different things.  Both content creators and investors are need for the growth of steem and some content creators actually end up investing and vice versa.

I saw it described as "like reddit, but with money voting." That was enough to peak my interest and I signed up the same day. (Nov. 2017)

Today I suppose it might be more accurate to update that to something like...

 " reddit, but with money voting plus games and apps which you can earn money while playing."
