¿Fue culpa de Max Verstappen? A Sergio 'Checo' Pérez se le ha escapado el subcampeonato del mundo de la Fórmula 1. Más allá de cualquier culpabilidad propia o de otros, no se puede negar que el mexicano ha concretado una temporada fenomenal, en la que obtuvo dos victorias y actuaciones fantásticas en circuitos callejeros y carreras con lluvia. El mejor resultado para un piloto mexicano en la Fórmula 1 lo tiene hasta ahora Sergio Pérez.

El Gran Premio de Abu Dhabi fue una carrera bastante normal, sin grandes sobresaltos ni accidentes graves. No tuvimos coches de seguridad ni Virtual Safety Car (VSC). Mick Schumacher y Latifi nos dieron un susto en mitad de carrera, pero ambos coches pudieron continuar sin generar detenciones de la misma. Y es que de haberse concretado un accidente entre ambos que ameritara la salida de un auto de seguridad, las cosas se hubieran inclinado aún más favor de Leclerc, quien hubiera aprovechado esto para obtener una parada gratis y permanecer delante del piloto mexicano.
Hubo algo en esta carrera en lo que el equipo Red Bull quizás no acertó. La segundo parada de Checo Pérez ocurrió en la vuelta 33, muy temprana, luego de que haya parado en la vuelta 15. Sólo 18 vueltas duraron dichos neumáticos duros que se supone podrían haber durado más, tal como en el caso de Max Verstappen, quien calzó neumáticos duros desde la vuelta 20 hasta el final y con un buen ritmo (38 vueltas). Es probable que dichos neumáticos hayan sido usados, pero más allá de eso, lo que si es un hecho es que Pérez no se sintió cómodo con esos neumáticos, estaba perdiendo ritmo ante un Leclerc que se le venía acercando peligrosamente.

El ritmo que Pérez pudo imprimir con el segundo set de nuemáticos duros fue superior, muy superior, pero no fue suficiente para llegar a un Leclerc quien pudo, al igual que Verstappen, conservar estos neumáticos hasta el final y con un ritmo aceptable. Claramente el quipo Red Bull no acertó con esta estrategia, o quizás fue inesperado el rendimiento bajo que tuvo ese primer set de neumáticos duros. Las cosas no salieron bien para Red Bull y Pérez en estas últimas dos carreras, y eso lo capitalizó Leclerc. Es más, algo similar ocurrió en Brasil con un Pérez perdiendo ritmo al final de la carrera, calzando neumáticos distintos a los de sus rivales y viendo como caía desde el segundo hasta el séptimo lugar, incluso perdiendo ante un Verstappen que había caído mucho en esa carrera y traía un mejor ritmo en compases finales del Gran Premio.
Aunque Red Bull le haya fallado a Pérez en estas últimas carreras, no se puede negar que el piloto mexicano no ha sido del todo constante en esta temporada, al menos no al nivel de Verstappen. Más allá de que se trate o no de una "conspiración interna" para darle a Max un mejor auto, es claro que en un punto de la temporada, más o menos después de Mónaco y Baku, Pérez se vio en un rendimiento notablemente inferior al de Verstappen. Mientras Max se paseaba por la victoria, Pérez luchaba por alcanzar o estar en el podio. Y de igual manera errores como los de Austria resultaron ser caros para el mexicano.

Nada de esto quita que Pérez sea de lejos el mejor compañero que ha tenido Verstappen desde Ricciardo, y que sea por mucho el mejor compañero que Max Verstappen pueda tener actualmente. Por otro lado, Max Verstappen quizás no habría sido el mejor compañero de Sergio en estas últimas carreras. Si bien es cierto que los dos puntos que Max lo pudo haber dado a Checo en Brasil no hubieran sido suficientes ante el resultado de Abu Dhabi, lo que si es cierto es que en esta última carrera Max pudo haber hecho algo.
Ningún piloto quiere reducir su ritmo o ser más lento a propósito. Y menos aún si se trata de un piloto como Max Verstappen, quien parece una "máquina" hecha con la consciencia de ganar. Verstappen en Abu Dhabi pudo haber reducido su ritmo en punta para así intentar de alguna manera ralentizar a un Leclerc que venía siendo perseguido por Pérez en las últimas vueltas. Existía el peligro de que Leclerc atacase y tomase la punta, pero era claro que el ritmo de Max era superior y podría haber retomado el liderato fácilmente, al menos en teoría.
Esto pudo haber ayudado a que Pérez llegase y atacase a Leclerc a pocas vueltas del final. Pero Max no lo hizo. De hecho, tampoco recuerdo haber escuchado alguna radio del equipo pidiéndole a Max que hiciera esto o de Checo pidiendo que Max lo hiciese. De todas maneras, lo más probable es que Max no hubiera querido hacerlo ni Checo hubiera querido que lo ayudasen de esa forma. Los pilotos quieren correr a la mayor velocidad posible y es muy raro que reduzcan su ritmo a propósito. Max Verstappen, de todas maneras, no podía hacer mucho desde su posición para ayudar a Pérez. Las cosas salieron así, y así ya quedaron.
Una excepción a lo anterior podría ser la de Lewis Hamilton en la última carrera del año 2016. Precisamente, en Abu Dhabi, Nico Rosberg peleaba el campeonato contra Lewis, y este en la punta de la carrera impedía que Rosberg fuera más rápido y así este pudiera ser adelantado por otros rivales. El cuarto lugar le habría negado a Rosberg el campeonato, y eso era lo que quizás Hamilton "sin querer" quiso hacer que sucediera reduciendo "sin querer" su ritmo.

Debemos felicitar también a Charles Leclerc por rescatar al menos para Ferrari un subcampeonato, el cual no remedia la deficiente temporada que han tenido, pero al menos le dio a Leclerc cierta alegría tras varios tragos amargos en este 2022. Ferrari, aunque no han tenido un cierre de temporada tan colorido, se perfilan en 2023 a ser de nuevo candidatos al título. Esperamos que ahora sí hagan las cosas bien y lleven la pelea hasta el final, ya sea que se sume otro equipo como Mercedes o no.

Was it Max Verstappen's fault? Sergio 'Checo' Perez has just missed out on the runner-up position in the Formula 1 World Championship. Beyond any fault of his own or of others, it cannot be denied that the Mexican driver has had a phenomenal season, with two victories and fantastic performances in street circuits and rainy races. The best result for a Mexican driver in Formula 1 so far has been achieved by Sergio Perez.
The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was a fairly normal race, with no major shocks or serious accidents. We had no safety cars or Virtual Safety Car (VSC). Mick Schumacher and Latifi gave us a scare in the middle of the race, but both cars were able to continue without stopping the race. Had there been an accident between the two that would have merited a safety car, things would have tilted even more in favor of Leclerc, who would have taken advantage of this to get a free stop and stay ahead of the Mexican driver.
There was one thing in this race that the Red Bull team perhaps didn't get right. Checo Perez's second stop came on lap 33, very early, after he had stopped on lap 15. Only 18 laps lasted on those hard tires, which presumably could have lasted longer, as in the case of Max Verstappen, who used hard tires from lap 20 to the end and with a good pace (38 laps). It is likely that those tires were used, but beyond that, what is a fact is that Perez did not feel comfortable with those tires, he was losing pace to a Leclerc who was dangerously approaching him.

The pace that Perez was able to print with the second set of hard tires was superior, far superior, but it was not enough to reach a Leclerc who could, like Verstappen, keep these tires until the end and with an acceptable pace. Clearly the Red Bull team did not get it right with this strategy, or perhaps it was unexpected how poorly that first set of hard tires performed. Things did not go well for Red Bull and Perez in these last two races, and Leclerc capitalized on that. Moreover, something similar happened in Brazil with Perez losing pace at the end of the race, wearing different tires than his rivals and seeing him fall from second to seventh place, even losing to a Verstappen who had fallen a lot in that race and brought a better pace in the final stages of the Grand Prix.
Although Red Bull has failed Perez in recent races, it cannot be denied that the Mexican driver has not been entirely consistent this season, at least not at the level of Verstappen. Beyond whether or not this is an "internal conspiracy" to give Max a better car, it is clear that at one point in the season, more or less after Monaco and Baku, Perez found himself noticeably underperforming Verstappen. While Max was cruising to victory, Perez was struggling to reach or be on the podium. And mistakes like those in Austria proved costly for the Mexican.

None of this takes away from the fact that Perez is by far the best teammate Verstappen has had since Ricciardo, and that he is by far the best teammate Max Verstappen could currently have. On the other hand, Max Verstappen might not have been the best teammate for Sergio in these last few races. While it is true that the two points that Max could have given Checo in Brazil would not have been enough given the result of Abu Dhabi, what is certain is that in this last race Max could have done something.
No driver wants to slow his pace or be slower on purpose. And even less if it is a driver like Max Verstappen, who looks like a "machine" made with the consciousness of winning. Verstappen in Abu Dhabi could have reduced his pace at the front in order to try to slow down Leclerc who was being chased by Perez in the last laps. There was a danger that Leclerc would attack and take the lead, but it was clear that Max's pace was superior and he could have easily retaken the lead, at least in theory.
This could have helped Perez to come in and attack Leclerc with a few laps to go. But Max didn't. In fact, I also don't recall hearing any radio from the team asking Max to do this or from Checo asking Max to do this. In any case, Max most likely would not have wanted to do it nor would Checo have wanted to be helped in that way. Drivers want to run as fast as possible and it is very rare that they slow down on purpose. Max Verstappen, anyway, couldn't do much from his position to help Perez. That's the way things turned out, and that's the way they stayed.
An exception to the above could be Lewis Hamilton in the last race of 2016. Precisely, in Abu Dhabi, Nico Rosberg was fighting for the championship against Lewis, and Lewis in the lead of the race prevented Rosberg from being faster and thus he could be overtaken by other rivals. Fourth place would have denied Rosberg the championship, and that was perhaps what Hamilton "unintentionally" wanted to make happen by "unintentionally" reducing his pace.
