Creo que todos en algún momento de nuestra vida hemos visto algún animal de compañía sobre todo perros o gatos con un extraño artefacto alrededor de su cuello que por lo regular los hace lucir algo graciosos debido a que asemejan una lámpara.

De ese objeto es que vengo a contarles, su función ya que últimamente ha estado muy presente en mi vida diaria y en la de los gatos que me rodean.

El collar isabelino es un instrumento utilizado por los veterinarios con el propósito de evitar que los animales puedan acceder a alguna parte de su cuerpo con su boca y lengua y así causar daño en lugar de bien, debido a que, por ejemplo, podrían retirarse los puntos, vendaje, alguna vía por la cual se les esté administrando medicacion, entre otros.

En resumen es una protección, cuyo propósito es cuidar a nuestros queridos peludos de sí mismos y de las imprudencias que podrían cometer si tienen acceso a ciertas zonas de su cuerpo, el collar isabelino suele ser de forma  troncocónica.

La gran mayoría de los collares isabelinos están elaborados en plástico, los hay con cierres mágicos, con botones de metal, con broches del mismo material y que se pueden sujetar del collar se tu perrito o gato para evitar que se lo retire, incluso se pueden elaborar en casa y algunos veterinarios para ahorrarle dinero a los humanos de sus pacientes los elaboran en la consulta con radiografías viejas,recientemente han surgido unos collares inflables que con mas cómodos para los animales, pero obviamente tienen un mayor costo.

Me imagino que estarán pensando, ¿y de donde salió ese nombre? Pues su nombre se inspira en los accesorios que usaba la reina Isabel I de Inglaterra durante su reinado,. La reina Isabel I  utilizaba gorgueras, una pieza tipo pañuelo que cubría el cuello.

La primera vez que me vi en la necesidad de un collar isabelino para mis gatos fue tras la operación de Señor Gato, y aunque me habían prestado uno no era acorde a su tamaño y me vi forzada a comprar dos, que me han sido de utilidad para Greta y Rusa en sus postoperatorios de esterilización y para elaborar algunos en casa para otros animales que han requerido su uso.

Aquí como ya seguramente pudieron notar entra en juego el tamaño del animal hay que elegir o elaborar el collar isabelino acorde a la edad y tamaño del animal de manera que impida que acceda a la zona efectuada, pero que al mismo tiempo no se lo pueda quitar y que le permita comer y beber.

En el caso de Señor Gato no tuve mayor problema porque los collares se compararon expresamente para él, pero Greta y Rusa al usarlo había que retirarselos para comer debido a que no podían llegar al alimento y esto nos acarreo algunas consecuencias, Rusa se retiro tres puntos en menos de dos minutos.

Otra observación es que es muy probable que tu gatito al comienzo del uso del collar camine hacia atrás, choque con todo y hasta maulle,  por favor ten paciencia y piensa en el bienestar de tu peludo en pocos días lo aprenderá a manejar a la perfección, creeme lo he vivido ya cuatro veces.

Así que aunque tu gatito o perrito parezca una lámpara piensa en que estás colaborando en su pronta recuperación. Así que aunque te de lastima con él o ella, no se lo retires, porque podría ser peor.

I think everyone at some point in their lives has seen a pet, especially a dog or cat, with a strange device around its neck that usually makes it look a little funny because it looks like a lamp.

That is what I have come to tell you about, its function, since lately it has been very present in my daily life and in the life of the cats around me. 

The Elizabethan collar is an instrument used by veterinarians with the purpose of preventing animals from accessing any part of their body with their mouth and tongue and thus causing damage instead of good, because, for example, stitches, bandage, some route by which they are being administered medication, among others, could be removed. 

In short, it is a protection, whose purpose is to take care of our beloved hairy of themselves and the recklessness that could commit if they have access to certain areas of your body, the collar is usually Elizabethan truncated shape. 

The vast majority of Elizabethan collars are made of plastic, there are with magical closures, with metal buttons, with pins of the same material and that can be attached to the collar of your dog or cat to prevent it from being removed, can even be made at home and some veterinarians to save money to human patients made in the office with old x-rays, have recently emerged some 
inflatable collars that are more comfortable for the animals, but obviously have a higher cost. 

I guess you're thinking, where did that name come from? Well, the name was inspired by the accessories worn by Queen Elizabeth I of England during her reign. Queen Elizabeth I wore ruffles, a scarf-like piece that covered her neck.

The first time I found myself in need of an Elizabethan collar for my cats was after Señor Gato's operation, and although I had borrowed one it was not in keeping with their size and I was forced to buy two, which have been useful for Greta and Rusa in their post-spaying operations and to make some at home for other animals that have required their use.

Here, as you may have already noticed, the size of the animal comes into play. You have to choose or elaborate the Elizabethan collar according to the age and size of the animal in such a way that it prevents it from accessing the area where it was sterilized, but at the same time it cannot be removed and it allows it to eat and drink.

In the case of Mr. Cat I had no major problem because the necklaces were compared specifically for him, but Greta and Rusa to use it had to remove them to eat because they could not reach the food and this brought us some consequences, Rusa was withdrawn three points in less than two minutes. 

Another observation is that it is very probable that your kitten at the beginning of the use of the collar will walk backwards, collide with everything and even meow, please be patient and think about the welfare of your furry in a few days will learn to handle it perfectly, believe me I have already lived it four times.

So even if your kitten or puppy looks like a lamp think that you are helping in its early recovery. So even if you get hurt with him or her, don't take it away from him or her, because it could be worse.
