For some strange reason, most men think that the knowledge of home repairs is innate in their genes, so they take it very seriously when a situation arises in the home that needs fixing. I would like to tell you an anecdote about my dad, but the truth is that I remember very few, so I bring you one about my son's dad, although at that time he was not yet a dad, I think it is still valid.

This happened almost 6 years ago, we had just moved in together, and it was my first time living in a house (I had only lived in flats before) since I arrived in Mexico, so I was not familiar with the maintenance that needs to be done. The house we moved into at the time belonged to his sister, so we didn't pay rent, but we were responsible for taking care of it and doing all the necessary maintenance.

One of the first things we had to do was to waterproof the roof. In this part of Mexico the rainy season is quite strong, and it was about to arrive, so this was necessary to be able to be calm during all the months it lasts. The problem was that the roof of the house had not received this treatment for a long time and the roof coating was beginning to crack. I suggested that we hire a mason to do the job, as it was more complicated than we had thought.

Of course, the answer was: "no, I can do it". Delusionally, I believed him and left everything in his hands. The weekend came, and he got down to work, he removed part of the waterproofing blanket because he said it was badly damaged, which worried me a lot, but I decided to trust him, as he was in charge of the waterproofing at his parents' house. He finished the work on the roof and at first glance it had looked very good, which put my mind at rest, but as you can imagine that peace of mind was momentary.

The following weekend we went out to another city for a friend's birthday party and while we were away a tremendous storm came down, the rainy season was practically just around the corner, but we were confident that the matter had been taken care of. That night when we got home it was still raining, so we rushed into the house to avoid getting wet, to our surprise it seemed to be raining inside the house as well.

We started moving all the furniture and placing buckets and towels everywhere, trying to contain the disaster. The good thing is that nothing was damaged because the leaks were only in one area of the house, guess which one, of course, where the man removed the mesh that he said was damaged. Luckily, it soon stopped raining, and we were able to stay calm for the rest of the night. The next day we got a bricklayer to go and repair the situation, and of course when he arrived he confirmed that it was a mistake to have removed that part of the mesh.

It took about a week to repair the part where he removed the mesh due to the constant rains, and it cost a good few pesos. That week was chaos because we had leaks almost until the mason finished the job, the good thing is that since that incident we have had almost no improvised home repairs, so it seems that it was a lesson learned.

Por alguna extraña razón, la mayoría de los hombres piensa que en sus genes viene innato el conocimiento de hacer reparaciones en casa, por lo que se toman muy en serio cuando en el hogar se presenta una situación que necesita arreglo. Me gustaría contarles alguna anécdota sobre mi papá, pero la verdad es que recuerdo muy pocas, así que les traigo una del papá de mi hijo, aunque en esa época todavía no era papá, creo que igual es válido.

Esto pasó hace casi 6 años, recién nos habíamos mudado a vivir juntos y era mi primera vez viviendo en casa (antes solo viví en departamentos) desde que llegué a México, así que no estaba familiarizada con el mantenimiento que hay que realizarles. La vivienda a la que nos mudamos en ese entonces pertenece a su hermana, así que no pagábamos renta, pero sí debíamos hacernos responsables de su cuidado y de hacerle todas las labores de mantenimiento necesarias.

Una de las primeras cosas que debimos hacer, fue impermeabilizar el techo. En esta zona de México la temporada de lluvia es bastante fuerte y estaba a punto de llegar, así que era algo necesario para poder estar tranquilos durante todos los meses que dura. Para ello se deben aplicar en el techo varias capas de un producto que es una especie de pintura, el problema es que el techo de esa casa no había recibido ese tratamiento en mucho tiempo y el manto que lo cubría comenzó a cuartearse. Ante esa situación yo sugerí que contratáramos a un albañil para que hiciera ese trabajo, ya que era más complicado de lo que habíamos pensado.

Por supuesto que la respuesta fue: "no, yo lo puedo hacer". Ilusamente, le creí y lo dejé todo en sus manos. Llegó el fin de semana y se puso manos a la obra, retiró un parte de la manta impermeable porque según estaba muy dañada, lo cual me preocupó bastante, pero decidí confiar, ya que él era el encargado de realizar el impermeabilizado en casa de sus padres. Terminó con las labores en el techo y a simple vista había quedado muy bien, lo cual me dejó tranquila, pero como se pueden imaginar esa tranquilidad fue momentánea.

El siguiente fin de semana salimos a otra ciudad para a la fiesta de cumpleaños de una amiga y mientras estábamos fuera cayó una tormenta tremenda, la temporada de lluvia estaba ya prácticamente a la vuelta de la esquina, pero nosotros estábamos confiados de que ese asunto ya estaba arreglado. Esa noche al llegar a casa aún estaba lloviendo, así que entramos rápido a la casa para no mojarnos, cuál sería nuestra sorpresa al ver que parecía que adentro de la casa también estaba lloviendo.

Comenzamos a mover todos los muebles y a colocar cubetas y toallas en todos lados, intentando contener el desastre. Lo bueno es que nada se dañó porque las goteras fueron solo en una zona de la casa, ¿adivinan cuál?, claro, donde el señor retiró la malla que según él estaba dañada. Por suerte, pronto terminó de llover y pudimos estar tranquilos el resto de la noche. Al día siguiente conseguimos a un albañil que fuera a reparar la situación y por supuesto que al llegar nos confirmó que haber retirado esa parte de la malla fue un error.

Reparar la parte en la que quitó la malla tardó aproximadamente una semana debido a las constantes lluvias y constó unos buenos pesos. Esa semana fue un caos porque tuvimos goteras casi hasta que el albañil terminó el trabajo, lo bueno es que a partir de ese incidente casi no hemos tenido reparaciones caseras improvisadas, por lo que parece que fue lección aprendida.
