Official Youtube [VR] app comes to Oculus Store!

Since the arrival of the Samsung GEAR VR we’ve had the ability to watch Facebook-bound videos with our (Facebook) friends in Oculus Rooms, plus via the Netflix VR app and also many independent apps that normally present a cinema environment where you can watch set content or latest cinema trailers (even with strangers appearing in nearby seats!).

A big gap has been that of quick and easy access to Youtube, be it the ‘360 videos’ or the regular videos, although it has been possible to access this via the native Samsung VR apps.

You could say that most 360 or VR movie content is still one big box of chocolates, but most of them sour-tasting. They’ve suffered from diverse or poor camera recording, bad streaming capability (especially if you have a poor connection) or by just being badly thought out, considering this is a new medium on our heads (sorry). The good news, is that this is starting to change, with better cameras and there’s certainly some great content worth finding. The sort that lights up new paths for VR video in the darkness. Back to this in a moment.

The point is it’s very welcome to see in the Oculus shop now the official (free) Youtube app for use with GEAR VR. As yet it’s not available for the Oculus GO, but I’m sure it’ll be there soon enough. It seems Google and Oculus have agreed to cosy up (as the Google Chrome browser has also added support for the Oculus Rift).

Anyway, what’s this free app like? Well, it’s good. It’s similar to the Netflix VR app. You get a nice screen that is swiftly adjusted to any size you like as you swipe the controller. If the video is actually 360 etc. content, then it automatically throws you into it.

Yes, there is a feature for connecting and watching socially with friends or strangers, and selecting one of a decent array of pre-set avatars (heads), and you can chat with voice and send expressions. It should be fun.

What about some content then? Well, you can find some just by speaking into the voice search bar or if you must, typing in each letter. You’ll still find yourself wondering what to say. So try saying “Google Spotlight Pearl”. This is a great piece of animated VR that is an example of the potential of 360, that doesn’t have to be film-based, and can be quite simple graphics. If you want to just watch it (click and drag around only) then the link is here.

One thing you’ll notice about Youtube VR is that certain themes lend themselves particularly well to 360 content. You’ll notice tons of roller-coaster rides, sitting-in-car POVs, live concerts, dancing and cheap thrills. You’ll notice Youtube as that familiar, transient vacuum it’s always been, unless it actually remembers content relevant to you, or you manage to put in some effort to find out something recommended or search something that might actually be ‘illuminated’ via VR.

This is because it still takes a good, accompanying story or documentary to really hit VR experiences home. And when you’re placed inside someone else’s shoes, well… this is where VR really shines. You’ll know it when you find it, or witness it.

For now, the good, the bad and the pointless are all part of an evolving medium finding itself, and this app is another small step to wider adoption (before AR arrives to make VR work even harder).

[The same Youtube VR app has already been available on Playstation VR, Google Daydream and Steam.]
