<div class="text-justify">Today, it is easy to judge other people by their appearance. When we meet a person for the first time, we tend to look at external aspects such as clothing, footwear, face, gestures and immediately we get an idea of the other person, without knowing him. We have been taught that certain characteristics belong to certain types of individuals, so all we do is give those individuals personality according to what we see externally. A simple equation, easy, but very dangerous and unfair.

There is a true phrase that says, "Appearances deceive. But even knowing this premise, we continue to fall into the error of judging without knowing. We believe that people different from us, with tattoos, piercings, a type of clothing are bad people and vice versa: well-dressed people have good intentions. It is easy to say that a fat person is not agile, that a brown person in certain clothes can be threatening and dangerous, that a pretty woman is not so intelligent and that a man in a suit can be successful. We pre-judge at every moment and almost without realizing it.

In Venezuela there is a well-known tale entitled **El diente Roto (The broken tooth)** by the writer **Pedro Emilio Coll**. This story deals precisely with how an individual is known and judged all his life by a fortuitous and isolated fact. The story begins by telling the moment when Juan Peña breaks a tooth due to a fight with his friends. This event causes the child, until that moment extroverted, to spend hours quiet, hitting the tip of the tongue, in the broken tooth:

>Juan didn't squeak and remained for hours in a hieratic attitude, as in ecstasy; while inside, in the darkness of his closed mouth, his tongue caressed the broken tooth without thinking.

The parents, on seeing this change of attitude, and not knowing what their son was doing in the darkness of his throat with his tongue, worried and sent for the village doctor, who examined him and diagnosed him:

>His son is better than an apple. What is indisputable," he continued in a mysterious voice, "is that we are in the presence of a phenomenal case: his son, my dear lady, suffers from what we now call the evil of thinking; in a word, his son is a precocious philosopher, a genius perhaps.

We must accept that the doctor makes this diagnosis because of the silence he sees in the child, who despite age is absorbed, thoughtful, uncommon characteristics in an infant. From this opinion of the doctor, all the people begin to judge the child as a genius, even his teachers, who until then had considered him incapable and slow. This is how Juan Peña grows up under the premise that he was a genius, a philosopher, but what no one imagined was that his silence and his apparent state of reflection was simply because he could spend hours playing with his tongue and broken tooth. Because of this belief, Juan Peña came to have the best and the best positions:

>Months and years passed, and Juan Peña was a deputy, academic, minister and was about to be crowned President of the Republic, when a stroke caught him caressing his broken tooth with the tip of the tongue. And the bells tolled and a rigorous national mourning was decreed; an orator wept in a funeral prayer in the name of the fatherland, and roses and tears fell on the tomb of the great man who had not had time to think.

This ironic and cruel ending makes us see how easy it is to judge people according to certain social norms. In this case, we tend to believe that there is maturity, intelligence, in people who are quiet or with glasses, who read or write. The case of Juan Peña, even, is pointed out when we speak of the number of Venezuelan politicians who come to occupy great positions only because they are considered intelligent and capable by their clothing or by a casual and isolated event.

These days I saw a friend in swiping with minimal effort through Tinder, discarding dozens of people just for their appearance. Every day we are more prejudiced and every day we care more about appearances. We are relentless in judging others, allowing ourselves to be carried away by appearances without giving ourselves a chance to really know ourselves. Perhaps if we put prejudices aside, we can have many surprises when we discover that behind each individual that surrounds us hides a talent and a personality that is waiting to be shown at the right moment.
