Understanding Depression — A Biblical and Practical Perspective
What is Depression?

Let us begin by understanding the meaning of depression from a general standpoint.

According to the dictionary, depression is described as:

A deep feeling of sadness, often accompanied by a loss of hope.

Example: She felt very depressed about the future.

A medical condition where a person may experience prolonged sadness, loss of interest, difficulty sleeping, fatigue, and other emotional disturbances.

Example: She was clinically depressed after losing her job.

A state of emotional or mental oppression, such as when someone is denied their rights, benefits, or entitlements.

Example: One who is unjustly treated in the workplace may feel depressed.

A situation that feels lower or diminished—in enthusiasm, energy, or expectations.

Example: Searching for a job in today’s economy can be depressing.

Depression makes a person feel very sad, hopeless, and unmotivated. It robs one of joy and can often lead to isolation, self-pity, or even physical exhaustion. While not every case of depression is spiritual, many spiritual battles manifest as emotional oppression.

Depression from a Biblical View
In the Bible, depression may not always be labeled the way it is today in medical terms, but it is clearly reflected in the lives of many people. A depressed person is often moody, sad, easily discouraged, full of complaints, and lacking joy. This state of heart can drain a person spiritually and mentally.

However, it’s important to note that a depressed person is not always possessed or demonized. Depression can result from life circumstances, trauma, personal failure, or a prolonged period of hopelessness.

But here is the good news:

“The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” – Psalm 34:18

God cares deeply about our mental and emotional well-being. Throughout scripture, we see how He comforts, restores, and strengthens those in despair—from David’s cries in the Psalms, to Elijah’s breakdown under the juniper tree.
