The fly has a different perception of time from ours: the world looks like a slow motion video. [Credits Pixabay](https://cdn.pixabay.com/photo/2016/01/08/11/32/housefly-1127619_1280.jpg) Nine times out of ten, just when we are now convinced that it has the second counted, the fly flies away under our nose: what is the superpower that almost always save them ? The answer might seem obvious: flies are faster … And yet things are not like this : this insect perceives time differently and moves in a world that for us could be that of a slow motion video. The pulses of light reach his brain with a very high frequency, 250 flashes per second (against our 60 per second). So, as fast as our movement may seem, the fly will look like a slow motion sequence and will find a way to be save (unless its sense or flight organs are damaged). [Credits](http://hex.alife.co.uk/insecteyes/) ### RESEARCH In general, in the insects , the smaller the species, the higher the speed at which images are received. Roger Hardie (University of Cambridge has conducted some experiments, told by [the BBC in a recent documentary](http://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-41284065), to study the functioning of the eyes of the flies and analyzed the speed at which the images are processed by their brain. (optical fibers) in the photoreceptors of the flies, then flashed the LED lights faster and faster, each flash produced a light jolt in the photoreceptors that a computer recorded.Tests have shown that these insects managed to process, every second, until six times the number of optical signals we can process. ### A CENTURY OF STUDIES Studies to understand what and how flies see are not new, with the first dating back to [the late twenties of the twentieth century](http://www.scholarpedia.org/article/Function_of_compound_eye). Until then it was believed that the insects view was very approximate, but today we know that it is far superior to our sight. For sight, the fly has two organs: [the compound eye and the ocelli](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthropod_eye). The eyes are formed by a variable number of hexagonal ommatidia: each ommatidia covers a segment of the global visual field (360 degrees). The image perceived by the insect is therefore mosaic, and its definition will be greater the higher the number of ommatidia: the flies have four thousand, the butterflies from 12 to 17,000 while the dragonflies 28 thousand … https://youtube.com/watch?v=FsEzKH4Tl9g Short Video From YouTube

I had thought about this before and now I got the answer. It is amazing that such a small insect can process light that faster!
