The NeW Hi-tech Levitation

Would  you like to move from one place to another "simply" by levitating , ie winning gravity? We are talking about [levitation](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Levitation) : a force capable of maintaining an object raised by contrasting gravity, but without physical contact ... Beautiful, but many would say it is science fiction.

Today it is actually science fiction, even if a recent discovery could change things and allow the levitation of even large bodies. It would be a first step towards the realization of a dream, perhaps as ancient as man, of being able to move on the Earth overcoming the force of gravity. To understand what it is necessary to introduce a new technological protagonist, [the acoustic tractor](https://phys.org/news/2018-01-world-powerful-acoustic-tractor-pave.amp) : an instrument that uses sound waves to move objects (for small hours) and keep them in mid-air.

The acoustic tractor works more or less like the magnetic levitators , which can keep a metallic sphere suspended by balancing the gravity with an electromagnetic one. Unlike these, however, they can act on multiple types of solids and liquids.

### HOW TO LIFT A SMALL MARBLE
The results of the research, conducted by a group of engineers at the University of Bristol, have been published in [Physical Review Letters](https://journals.aps.org/prl/abstract/10.1103/PhysRevLett.120.044301). The study claims that it is possible to construct a prototype of acoustic tractor to support objects of certain dimensions in mid-air, and in the future also people, but which could find more applications in manipulating drug capsules or micro surgical instruments inside a body human, acting from the outside.

It is not the first time that an acoustic tractor (levitator) is realized, but so far only small objects have been moved, with dimensions smaller than the wavelength of the sound. As soon as you tried to use objects larger than one centimeter, they began to move uncontrollably - because the sound field of the levitator is rotary and this motion is transmitted to the object to be supported.

The new system, instead, allows you to control and stabilize the sound beam of the tractor and with waves on 40 kiloHertz, a frequency that can only heard by bats . The researchers managed to levitate a 2 cm sphere of polystyrene , maintaining control. The new system uses tornado-like vortices, where a very loud sound surrounds a silent core.

At that point the applications will be multiple and perhaps still all to imagine.

It's amazing how fast we are developing these new technologies and I can't wait to see where we will be in ten years. I think the Germans are developing a magnetic railway that means the train is basically hovering over magnets. Could be the future of public transport without using fossil fuels.

Bristol University, one of the great seats of learning in the UK alongside Oxford, Cambridge and Hull. I can recreate this in the back of my car, it doesn't have a spare wheel - just a spare wheel shaped BOSE base bin - throw on some dubstep at full volume and the boot contents levitate while the car mirrors do a pretty dance!

The bullet trains around the world are a good example of the magnetic levitation but definitely moving and holding them in the air without any support would not be easy because humans are very large in size yet in the future we can approach that thing. Yesterday, I was reading a paper and it was based on the theory that in the future humans could be sent the way we send papers to each other. Let's see what wonders come with time.
