Coming as I do from a traditional finance background, once of the things that has struck me most about crypto land is how undeveloped the financial landscape is. It really is the wild west of investing, and while decentralisation and lack of regulation has its advantages, it also certainly leads to a situation where buyer beware is perhaps the most relevant advice that can be given to any new crypto investor. Scams and fraudulent activity abound in every corner of the market, and crypto investors enjoy none of the protections of an investor in a more established financial market.

Nowhere is this more evident than in the area of crypto currency analysts. I firmly believe that the vast majority of these so called “analysts” have absolutely no idea what they are talking about. None. Zero. Zip. I have spoken in previous posts about the “I reckon” factor. Most analysis is based on no deeper logic than this, and the value of this analysis is effectively zero. Despite this, these so-called experts wield enormous power with thousands of followers on platforms like YouTube and Steemit. They quite literally can move markets with their posts. Its not uncommon to see a well followed blogger release a piece that recommends a particular coin and then see that coin rise in value by 50% - 100% over the next day or two. SubStratum is the latest example I have seen of this. There are numerous examples in mainstream financial markets of well followed journalists publishing newsletters and then profiting off the subsequent price rise. The scam works as follows. Accumulate a position in a small capitalisation, thinly traded company, write a positive article about the prospects of this business and then sell into the subsequent rally as your follower’s dive in to take advantage of your recommendation. The journalist/blogger pockets a tidy profit, while the average investor loses as the price falls after the hype fades. In the real world, the authors of these scams go to prison. In crypto land there is no such protection for the regular investor.

The article I have linked deals with these issues in greater depth and is well worth reading for any investor. The best advice I can give is to trust no one who holds themselves out as a crypto analyst, rely on your own research, and have a good understanding of the limits of your own psychology.

I agree sentiment on crypto market in general is greedy due in part of the sky rocketing market cap since the beginning of this year, 2017. The potential of missing out is in a lot of people's head. But just a few years back the same people were probably thinking this was a stupid idea. My hand is up to admit I am one of those people. The market must be near its peak :p

In the short term, I’m unsure. I think it will possible rebound a little after the Christmas period ends but not a huge amount. Longer term though I’m not positive. I think it has too many technical short comings to be succesful. I think other coins will overtake it.
