The Power of Effort Without Anxiety About the Outcome

What we want rarely comes in the exact way we imagine. Still, when we work toward something, the results come — not always directly, not always at the speed we wish, and sometimes in creative and unexpected ways, but they do arrive. I’ve been through this many times, and that’s why I can say: it’s better to make an effort without focusing too much on the outcome.

Visualizing the result as if it were already achieved is part of the process. It’s hard to accomplish something if you can’t picture yourself accomplishing it. Visualization helps strengthen willpower, but we have to be careful not to get stuck in the dreaming stage.

For almost a whole year, I knew I needed to lose weight. I pictured myself improving my diet, imagined the groceries I would buy for healthy meals, and even saw myself focused at the gym — but I didn’t lift a finger to make it happen. Nearly a year went by, and I hadn’t put anything into practice. I used all kinds of excuses: college was demanding too much of me, I felt too tired, I didn’t have time. But the truth is, I could’ve started sooner — I just didn’t want it badly enough. Part of that failure came from focusing too much on dreaming and not enough on action.

Until one day, something changed. I looked in the mirror and realized I had to do something about it. I decided to focus less on results and more on the practice itself. So I started walking every day. In the first few days, I realized I could easily walk 4 kilometers, so after four days, I increased to 5 kilometers. When 5 became too easy, I pushed it to 7. After two weeks of walking, I decided to alternate with running. Little by little, I began to enjoy this practice — even though it can be quite uncomfortable at times. But when I got home and felt that sense of accomplishment, I felt satisfied.

I haven’t weighed myself often since I started running every day, but the last time I did, I found out I had lost 4 kilos. However, the changes in my measurements are much more significant — it feels like I lost more than that. I’ve come to the conclusion that in these two months of daily runs, I’ve lost fat and gained lean muscle. Without a doubt, it’s been worth the effort.

And more than that — when you change one habit, other habits follow more easily. Since I started exercising, my diet also changed, I began sleeping better, and I’ve felt more cheerful. All of this because I made an effort without obsessing over the results — I focused on the experience. I believe that’s the best way to make an effort.

I try to carry this lesson into other areas of life, and I’ve been reflecting on the times when I couldn’t reach a goal even though I tried. Most of the time, the result didn’t come, as I mentioned, because I was too busy visualizing the future instead of putting in the work necessary to get there. But once I noticed that pattern, I started doing things differently. Making an effort without obsessing over the outcome has brought me much better results — though, of course, it’s always important to know where you want to go.

Dificilmente aquilo que queremos vem da forma que nós imaginamos, mesmo assim, quando trabalhamos em direção a algo, o resultado vem, nem sempre de uma maneira direta, nem sempre na velocidade que precisávamos, e às vezes vem de forma criativa e inusitada, mas com certeza chega. Passei por isso diversas vezes, e por isso afirmo: é melhor se esforçar sem focar tanto no resultado. 

A visualização de já ter o resultado de algo que queremos pronto, faz parte do processo. É difícil conquistar algo quando não imaginamos a conquista. Visualizar faz parte do desenvolvimento da vontade, mas temos que tomar cuidado ao fazer isso, para não ficarmos presos no campo do sonho. 

Por quase um ano inteiro, sabia que precisava perder peso. Eu me imaginava melhorando minha alimentação, as coisas que compraria para minhas refeições saudáveis, também me via fazendo academia focada, mas não movia um dedo para fazer acontecer. Assim, quase um ano inteiro se passou e eu não coloquei em prática o que queria. Usei muitas justificativas: a faculdade estava exigindo demais, eu me sentia muito cansada, não tinha tempo. Mas a verdade é que dava pra eu ter começado antes,  só que não quis isso o suficiente. Parte dessa falha, foi por focar demais no campo do sonho e não partir pra prática.

Até que um dia isso mudou. Eu me olhei no espelho e percebi que tinha que fazer algo a respeito, e decidi fazer isso sem focar tanto nos resultados, e sim na prática. Então, comecei a caminhar todos os dias. Nos primeiros dias, vi que consegui caminhar facilmente 4 km, então depois de 4 dias aumentei pra 5kms, quando 5 ficou fácil demais, aumentei pra 7, e depois de duas semanas caminhando, decidi alternar com corrida. Aos poucos fui gostando dessa prática que em certo ponto é bastante desconfortável, mas quando chegava em casa e sentia a sensação de dever cumprido, me sentia satisfeita. 

Não me pesei muitas vezes depois que comecei a correr todos os dias, mas da última vez que me pesei, descobri que perdi 4 quilos, porém o resultado na redução de minhas medidas é muito maior, como se eu tivesse perdido mais. A conclusão que chego é que nesses dois meses de corridas diárias, perdi gordura e ganhei massa magra. Sem dúvida, um esforço que tem valido a pena. 

Sem contar que quando você muda um hábito, outros hábitos também são mudados mais facilmente. Como passei a me exercitar, minha alimentação também mudou, passei a dormir melhor, e a me sentir mais bem humorada. Tudo porque me esforcei para algo, sem focar tanto assim no resultado, e sim na experiência. Penso que essa é a melhor forma de esforço.

Tento levar a lição que aprendi com essa experiência para outros aspectos da vida, e tenho refletido sobre as vezes que não consegui alcançar um objetivo mesmo me esforçando. Na maioria das vezes o resultado não vem, como eu disse, porque fico visualizando demais o futuro, em vez de me esforçar o necessário para alcançá-lo. Mas desde que percebi esse padrão, tenho feito diferente. O esforço sem focar no resultado, tem trazido resultados muito melhores, embora seja importante sempre saber onde se quer chegar.

This is something many of us are guilty of, we daydream about the end goal but ignore the process. Give all the reasons why we can't start, but can't stop thinking and dreaming of what could be when we do start. And this ends up making us achieve nothing but wasted time in the long run.
