This morning, I was at my stress limit due to various family things. Despite this, something good happened, and it made me think about enjoying life more slowly and savoring every moment. Here's the story.

Amidst all the stress, I found myself craving apple cake from my favorite café. I had some things to do in town. So I left home early in the morning with my daughter.

Since I hadn’t had my morning coffee, my first stop was the café. I ordered the long-awaited apple cake and coffee. When it was time to pay, I realized, to my horror, I had forgotten my wallet at home 😱 Oh no .......

Luckily, I had a banking app on my phone with which I can withdraw money at supermarkets and drag stores. I told a café stuff, “I’m so sorry, I forgot my wallet at home. I’ll go withdraw some money…” He replied, “No worries, have your coffee first, then you can take care of it.” What? Such flexibility in a chain store?? I needed few seconds to understand what he said. 

Gratefully, I sat on the sofa, savoring my coffee and cake. Pure bliss. It was hectic with only two hours before I had to pick up my child, but still blissful. The photo at the beginning of this post was taken at that moment. Thank you so much, dear sir 😭

When I told him I was going to withdraw money, he said, “Take your time.” After returning with the cash, he was still chatting leisurely with the same customer. As a token of my gratitude, I left a bit extra.

This café, which I frequented as a workplace before renting an office, has always been cozy, and the person has been there since those days. Even after getting an office, I visit the cafe for breaks and a change of scenery. The incident today made me love the cafe even more. I aspire to offer such service to my customers.

Having lived in Tokyo, Kyoto, Austria, India, and Germany, I've become more easy-going, although recent years of parenting have brought back some edginess. This experience, thanks to the café person's attitude, reminded me of the importance of savoring life and enjoying moments of happiness.

今朝、私は諸々あってストレスマックスでした。それでもいいことがあって、ゆっくり味わって楽しんで生きようと思ったというお話です。

ストレスがたまりにたまっている中、それでもやっぱりどうしてもよく行くカフェでりんごのケーキを食べたくて、街に用事もあったので、子供と一緒に朝早く家を出ました。

朝のコーヒーを飲まずに出てきたので、まずはカフェ。ゆっくりコーヒーを飲むぞ！とカフェにかけこんで、念願のりんごのケーキとコーヒーを注文しました。顔見知りのお店のおっちゃんがコーヒーを淹れ始めて、いざお会計というときに家に財布を忘れたことに気づきました 😱 なんてこった！ 

幸いスマホにインストールしてある銀行のアプリを使えばスーパーなどで出金できるので、「ごめんなさい、お財布家に忘れてしまったので、お金下ろしてきます・・・」というと「まあまあ、まずコーヒー飲んでそのあとでいいよ」と。えええ、チェーン店でそんな融通効くの！？

お言葉に甘えて、ソファーに座って、コーヒーとケーキを味わいました。ああ至福。子供のお迎え2時間後でばたばたもいいところだけれど至福・・・。冒頭の写真はそのときに撮ったものです。おっちゃん、本当にありがとう😭

お客さんと世間話をしているおっちゃんに「お金下ろしてくるね」というと「ゆっくりいっといで」とのこと。お金を下ろして戻ってくるとおっちゃんはまだ同じお客さんのところでくつろいでいました。お礼も兼ねて、少し多めにお金を置いてきました。

このカフェは、オフィスを借りる前は仕事場がわりによく通っていたカフェで、おっちゃんは多分当時からずっとこのカフェにいます。とても居心地が良く、オフィスを借りてからも、街で休みたいとき、気分転換をしたいときに訪れます。今回の一件でこのカフェがいっそう好きになりました。私もサービスを提供するときはお客さんにこんな対応をしたいです。

私は東京、京都、オーストリア、インド、ドイツと転々として、ずいぶん丸くなり、ゆったりもしたとは思うのですが、この数年の子育て期間はよい期間だったもののまたとげとげせかせかしっがちです。改めて、おっちゃんの対応から、ゆっくり味わって人生を楽しむのって大事だなと思わされました。そしてなんとも幸せな気持ちになりました。
