I'm happy to write a post to Needlework Monday after a while. It's Thursday though.

I bought an iPad mini last year and although I put a cover on it, I was hoping to have a bag for it when I carry it around. A while ago, I had an idea that I should embroider and make a bag. Finally I started working on it yesterday.

The pattern is from a book by embroidery artist Yumiko Higuchi. Her books are also available in English.

Yumiko's botanical designs make me happy just by looking at them.

I found some hemp fabric in my leftover fabric box that looked easy to stitch, and I had about the size of a tablet left, so I decided to use it. It's a little thin, but I think it'll work. I silently copied the pattern on it. I haven't even started embroidering yet, and already my work is very meditative. It's so nice, making progress step by step in silence.

Last night I stayed up late until midnight to work on it, and today I spent the morning just embroidering while my daughter, who wanted to take today off from school played Minecraft (last week and this week are winter break, so going to school is optional).

The embroidery book by Yumiko Higuchi above is a memorable book that my mother sent me for my birthday a few years ago. She asked me what I wanted for my birthday and then I requested two of Yumiko Higuchi's books. My mother often sent me food and gifts from Japan, and at the time I didn't imagine that my mother would pass away so soon.

My mother taught me various crafts, not only needlework but also origami, etc. Looking back, the first needlework she taught me was cross-stitching, which is a variety of embroidery. I wanted to make a farewell gift for my French teacher in the U.S., so we bought a cross-stitch kit with a Little Red Riding Hood motif and we made it together ... or maybe my mother finished most of it.

I often stayed up late with my mother and grandmother and we would have long talks and do crafts over a cup of delicious tea and sweets. I miss my two favorite family members. They left me with many memories and I feel as if they come to visit me when I stay up late by myself.

I ran out of thread and had to pause my embroidery, but I bought it at a craft store in the evening. I have a feeling I'm going to stay up late again tonight 😅 Maybe my mother and my grandma are smiling.

Such was the story of embroidery and memories.

去年iPad miniを買って、カバーはつけてあるものの、持ち歩くときに入れる袋があるといいなと思っていました。少し前に「そうだ、刺繍をして自分で作ればいいじゃない」とひらめいて、昨日重い腰を上げました。

図案は刺繍作家の樋口愉美子さんの『[樋口愉美子のステッチ12か月](https://amzn.to/3UQ1i3z)』より。樋口さんの植物の図案は見ているだけで幸せな気持ちになります。

余り布ボックスにあった麻の布が刺しやすそうで、ちょうどタブレットの大きさくらい残っていたのでこれに。ちょっと薄めですがどうにかなるかな。チャコペーパーを挟んで黙々と図案を写していきます。まだ刺繍を始めてもいないのにすでに作業がものすごく瞑想的。いいですね。

昨日の夜は久しぶりに真夜中まで夜更かしして刺繍を進め、今日は今日で学校を休みしたいと言う子供（先週今週は冬休み2で通うのは任意なのです）がマインクラフトをする横で午前中はひたすら刺繍をしていました。

冒頭に書いた樋口さんの刺繍の本は、数年前に母が誕生日に送ってくれた思い出の本です。誕生日に何が欲しいか聞かれて、樋口さんの本二冊を頼んだのでした。よく日本から食料やプレゼントを送ってくれて、当時はこんなに早く母が亡くなってしまうなんて思ってもみませんでした。

母は針仕事でなく折り紙などいろいろな手芸を教えてくれたのですが、思い返してみると、一番初めに教えてくれた手芸はクロスステッチで、刺繍だったんですよね。アメリカでお世話になったフランス人の先生にお別れのプレゼントを作りたくて、赤頭巾のモチーフのクロスステッチのキットを買ってきて一緒に作りました・・・というか多分母がほとんど仕上げてくれました。

母や祖母とはよく一緒に夜更かしをして、おいしいお茶とお菓子をつまみながら長話をしたり、手芸をしたりしました。大好きな二人がもうこの世界にはいないのは寂しいのですが、たくさんの思い出を残してくれて、一人夜更かししていると二人が遊びに来てくれるような気がします。

糸を使い果たして、刺繍を一時中断していましたが、夕方手芸屋さんで買い足してきました。今夜も夜更かしをしてしまう予感が・・・😅

そんなこんなの久しぶりの刺繍と思い出話でした。
