My two square meter garden log - Dec 11 2022 / 2㎡の庭の記録 2022年12月11日

It's been three weeks since the last post about my mini balcony garden. It is colder and there is more snow this year in Germany. I expected that it would be a warm winter as it was hot this summer ... I was wrong 😅

It seems pretty much everything is dying on my balcony but surprisingly some plants are alive.

Broccoli, Brussels sprouts and kales from the Brassica family are still surviving. We harvest kale leaves time by time and even had some mini broccolis recently.

It is said that chard is not winter hardy but somehow they are surviving. I'm happy to have Spinach-ish (actually they are in the same family) leaves from them. I could have planted them more ... I'll do so next year.

Miner's lettuce (Winterpostelein in German) is one of my favorite leaves in winter. I put it on top of my buddha bowls 😁 They look dead but once the snow is gone, they recover.

Celeries are also winter hardy. I learned to grow celery from a post when it was Steemit time. After that I think I rarely buy them. I grow a celery variety called "soup celery". It doesn't develop thick stems. But we don't eat celery sticks so leaves are totally enough for our use mostly for bolognese sauce and soup. Same as miner's lettuce, it doesn't look alive but once warm days come, they stand up again. Even they survived under 50cm of snow a few years ago.

冬ですね！今年はドイツは11月に雪が降り、寒い冬になりそうです。夏が猛暑だったので、冬は穏やかかな・・・と期待していたのですが、大外れでした。

私のミニバルコニーの植物は枯れ果ててしまったようにも見えるのですが、なんと、生きているものもあって、時々収穫して食べています。

キャベツ類のケール、芽キャベツ、ブロッコリーは毎年秋植えが調子良く今年も植えました。芽キャベツはもうちょっと早く植えた方が良かったものの、ケールやブロッコリーからは時々収穫しています。緑の野菜といえば、チャードも生きています。ケールは鳥との競争ですが 😅  冬に餌がないのはかわいそうだよねとネットはせずにそのまま置いています。

あとスベリヒユという葉物をドイツに移ってから知り、この時期大好きでよく食べます。ちょっとヌルッとして納豆ご飯や日本の丼もの、醤油とごま油の味によく合うのです。

セロリも生きていて、スープやボロネーゼソースを作るときに重宝しています。セロリを家で育てるのはSteemit時代にどなたかの投稿で学んで、以来ほとんど買っていません。うちでは茎が太くならないハーブのような見た目のスープセロリを育てています。セロリスティックはあまり食べず、スープやボロネーゼが主な用途なのでこれで十分なのです。

庭仕事はほとんどすることがありませんが、来月2023年の種を選ぶのが楽しみです。

みなさんの庭では何が生きていますか？特に北半球の北の北の人たちの庭を覗いてみたいです :)

In which hardiness zones are you growing your plants? If it's not too north, I definitely recommend to grow greens from end of summer to autumn. You will be surprised that how less pests and diseases plants have. Also less watering is needed. It's almost maintenance free 😁

I had to look that up - I just plant things, sometimes they grow, sometimes not. Hardiness zone 7a, it seems. My balcony has unopenable south-facing windows though, making it a little warmer in winter, and almost too warm to enjoy in the summer, so what hardiness zone that is, is anybody's guess!
