The Black Carpenter Bee, And A Bad Memory of It

I remember when I was a child, I often heard the hum of [cicadas](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cicada#/media/File:Neotibicen_linnei.jpg). Their hum was shrill like a chainsaw. I'm going to find out where the hum is coming from when I find it I'll catch the cicada and put it in a matchbox, and the cicada will buzz incessantly from inside the matchbox.

One time, I saw an insect sucking nectar on a flower. I thought it was a cicada and I caught it. Suddenly, it stung my thumb until it became swollen. I cried because it was so painful. Apparently what I caught wasn't a cicada, but a carpenter bee. Yes, cicadas with carpenter bees are somewhat similar. It was an experience that I will never forget.

Carpenter bees are a species in the genus belonging to the sub-family *[Xylocopinae](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carpenter_bee)*. It loves the nectar of flowers. Carpenter bees have very strong jaws and they are able to perforate hard plants such as dead wood and they will nest in it.

Wow, that really is a extraordinary bee ! I can not remember to have seen anyone like that ever before, totally in black ;) .. Looks kind of the bad-guy under the bees like that, also I suppose wasps are still the dominating bad-guys, hehe ;)
