Morning

It was a morning like it always is in the square. The sun that shines has been broken into a thousand more; the birds are looking stressed and the birds in general seem rather clam in a rather desperate way. It is a world of towers, but where the towers rise is impossible to know. There are the old towers that have been repaired from time to time and bored into the sky but all they have done of late is make their numbers larger and higher into the sky. The last city was destroyed and rebuilt and rebuilt until no-one knows what it looked like. And then it was forgotten and the forgetting became the only way to remember it. Filled up with earth and turned into gardens for doves, itself became something to be forgotten in favour of the endless repetition of memory and forgetfulness. All is in search of the past, glory is a lie, the future is forgotten and the present is only passing time, a moment before time moves on to the next moment.

The undergrounds were not just undergrounds, they were the structures of the forgotten forever. They were homes to forgotten people who forgot the long forgotten, who grew up in the city for whatever duration of time that life in that city lasted for most of the people in the city. The people who couldn't live in the towers because they had lived through those towers and had forgotten the city. It wasn't enough to have met a few and grown up with the people in the towers, you had to be living in the city more specifically, it was a condition of living in the city, a condition of existence and belonging. Life in the towers was an empty dream of glory, a greater height for buildings and houses than the rest of the inhabitants could ever hope to achieve. Lifted up towards the heavens and the earth and left to rot. It was a home, a home to the highest people in the towers and an empty emotion on the lips of everyone not in the towers.

Fairy was a resident of the undergrounds and as a resident of the undergrounds Fairy became something of a myth and a legend. Fairy was a living story, somebody put there by the people of the land to make them feel better about their lives and more importantly the world itself. Fairy was a monster tied to a lantern. She had no roots, she had no place to return to, she was a monster in the belly of the earth. And in the city it was a place nobody went to, a place you only went to if you had a reason too.

Fairy worked at a place where many people went to, the food place or the sandwich place. It was a place that gave food out that weren't bought and it was a place where people went to get a sandwich or have a meal or snack. There was a pond at one side of the building and on the pond was a fish with legs. It was a thing that didn't really look like a fish, it was a thing that looked like a fish. The people who went to the pond used the fish to frighten their children or children who may have forgotten their parents or who one had forgotten. The fish was a legend, Fairy was the creature behind the fish. Fairy was the death in the fish. It was said the fish was a sign of doom or the death of something, because it dragged itself out of the water and would die, as if it had forgotten that it was dead. The fish couldn't swim and it just sort of did. If it was alive, then it wasn't breathing. It was just a sort of sapient ectomorph that could not swim.

Fairy worked for a man who was an undergrounder. He owned the land the undergrounds were on now. He had a shop which kept a promise, a shop that provided goods to people who had forgotten home for whatever reason.
