I made a comment on a similar thread 3 weeks ago that I'd like to share here: 

A lot of people using steemit around the world are poor. Dirt poor. According to [this](http://www.globalresearch.ca/one-and-a-half-billion-people-live-on-less-than-1-25-per-day/5443472) article, in 2015 more than 2 billion people lived on less than $2 per day. In 2017 that number probably hasn't shrunk dramatically.
I don't think they would care if they happened to slightly irritate some people on steemit, when $1/day, which is definitely attainable even for a new user, could mean a 50% increase on their income!
I guess what I'm trying to say is that steemit can be a life changer for those people, not just an interesting social media that happens to earn you a few bucks (+blockchain technology,+lack of censorship). Now I have no idea how many of those people actually are on steemit but there surely are some people saying $1 is a lot to them: "By keeping an small money SBD after a month i can still earn for our saving...in that case blogging after a year is a big money for us..cause $1 in our country is 50.65pesos...soo its a big amount for us.." https://steemit.com/steemit/@bien/steemit-will-make-our-dream-come-true#@anomiej/re-bien-steemit-will-make-our-dream-come-true-20170706t111847807z (please note that this user is absolutely NOT a spammer, and probably lives above $2/day)

The most experienced users will realize that spamming isnt the most efficient way to make money on steemit on the long term. Short-term though, it can be effective and it's the default strategy for new users. It's actually a necessary strategy if you don't speak english, or if you speak it badly, since you can generate hundreds of comments that way, and almost none by following steem guidelines.

Taking all these things into perspective, I can understand that, in some cases, there can be a justified incentive to spam, even though it obviously is bad for steem as a whole.

Mate your upvotes alone gave me like 2 rep points lately! When I see your posts I always read them, before or after commenting because you deserve it. You share quality content and you are willing to support your followers generously! Thank you so much for it!

I don't understand some of those bots, like they really think people are idiots. But I don't think there are so many of them. Also english is not my first language and when I write my comments or posts and I have any doubts if I spelled something wrong I rush to dictionary to see if I got that right.

I only recently joined steemit, and that was the first thing that jumped out at me about the site. It was definitely a hard shift from some of the other sites I used to post at prior to moving over here. The biggest positive thing that stands out for me about steemit though, is how great the community over here is. Even with the inclusion of the obvious spammers and grabbers, there is very little toxicity here compared to other sites. I love it.

I'm only just getting started reading through your stories, but I'm enjoying them for sure. You've got a great style and an interesting perspective on some of the realities I think we all ponder from time to time.

It makes a lot of sense why you would feel this way as you seem to focus more on authoring and receiving thorough feedback. I get a little annoyed as well with the plethora of 'shitty' comments to be curt. I'm not sure exactly their demographic, I haven't really delved to deep into whose writing what, but sometimes it's best to not comment at all. I do, however, feel for some people who are trying to make a name for themselves. I aslo think a lot people might be scared to be harsh on the platform cause they don't want to get down-voted or silenced.

Yes eveyone is getting those comments daily, I am just wondering if these are bots or they might just copy-paste the same tect over and over. I made a post an hour ago to test how many people are accually reading my post. Most of them failed... :(

I think you're right that these kind of begging comments are not in place in this community, although I think it's just a matter of time until these guys will realize it doesn't work and thus will change their tactics. Leaving steem or creating their own quality content.

What I've noticed about these kind of people, mostly from people from the Asia continent, is that they only see quick money. 

I hope we can help and guide these people to creating their own content instead of begging on every post, without even taking the time to read a single sentence as you've mentioned.

I totally agree with you. Especially after putting oneself out in an article, receiving irrelevant comments would undoubtedly disappoint any author (at least it disappoints me :( ) In my opinion they are not from any particular country or because of cultural differences. It is just my opinion and what I have observed and concluded from commenters of my posts that these spam creators are from all over the world.

I think Steemit has grown mature to some of the users. I bet at the beggining it was set up, having to beg for followers was not  in the picture. It started probaly after seeing all these dollar. 

Nonetheless, some people wants a shortcut though. 

I too was guilty and was embarassed like hell. Since I am new, I hope to connect with people with same interest.  I put a genuine comment, and put my a link to my post, sincerely to tell the person that we have the same interest. 

To my shame, I was told it is a 'bloggerbaiting' and I should not have done that. It was like a punch to the face, and If we really face to face with each other my face will looks like 'salmon red' I deleted the whole comment. And never even think to do that again. 

Well, my intentions was not to promote , rather to share same experience. 

Ethic is a big word. Not so sure that newbies like me have an idea of the whole proffesionalism in this platform.

I totally agree with you! I've thought about writing a post talking about the same problem.
Having to read, over and over again, this constant begging for followers and votes, is exhausting.
When I write a post I like to read the sincere opinion of those who read it. Especially when it comes to criticism of my work.
Even in Steemit chat they are very annoying with the constant private messages, begging and begging ...
I think the big reason is the search for easy and quick earnings... The money they can receive is far more important than the community growth or what they can learn from the posts.

Yeah, I'm definitely on the same boat with you here, bro. I get especially annoyed with western people who just copy/paste the same 3 replies they've typed up in a specific pattern. I've never understood how they believe doing this is going to net them upvotes and help them get ahead on here. 

They at least speak the fucking language well and could spend a few minutes reading through the post they're commenting on and show some respect.  Some people really must think this is just a way to get a free lunch basically without putting any effort or work in.

Haha, no sorry. Had to.. I think its an approach. I have seen people from western countries do it too, maybe not as often though. Some people just feel that's the way to do it. They associate followers with success. When really its quality of followers IE: people with related interests or common goals. Those are the good people to have follow you. 

Its a follow or an upvote being organic, as opposed to pushed or forced.

I also commented on the post you referenced. For different reasons though haha! but yes the spammy comments have increased which is unfortunate. Anyway, thanks for the thoughts yo. You are appreciated

I bet you there are people who are Ninjas at this and skim read the articles. There's too much incentive for it. For instance, I wrote an article "**An Argument for Bitcoin as a Ponzi*"  THEY HATED IT ***tons of flagging***, that's how I knew it was genuine.

Definitely seems to be the common issue here around steemit and what separates the small, decent,  large earners here from Steemit. I even know some steemit users who ask me how I end up getting about $10 comments, and I just simply tell them, actually read a post and give thoughtful feedback. Even then, some folks can't even do that properly unfortunately. Some people don't want to take the initiative or time to read someone's post and be respectful enough to give considerate feedback. Some people want to waste your time, and devalue your voting power, etc. Anyway, good insight, I'll see ya around my friends ✊️

I get it a lot too. Ignoring it is probably the best. The funny thing there is not much to gain from a upvote from me. The power is spent on those who show interest and do so continuously.

At the same time a lot of users are new, kinda seems like desperate for upvotes and seem to spam generic comments not bothering to read and actually engage with the content or the author. I don't know if you received that but there's a kind of comment like "if you follow me I'll surprise you". Those are funny, tbh. :D

I also find those obnoxious, and mostly because I have no idea if any of them are sincere. The first time I got, "Wow, really funny!" I was like, yeah. I mean, I tried hard to be funny, and expected to succeed, and I'm glad someone appreciates my sense of humor.

But then it kept happening only on posts that I had tagged "funny" even though I sometimes post funny posts without that tag. And I also had someone tell me "you made a great photo" when I tagged something "photography" because I was sharing a friend's photo, and talking about photography, but the post was clear that the photo was not MY work.

So then I was like, "ugh".

On the other hand, I'm a fast reader, and was once accused of posting before I could have even read the whole post. That was untrue. And the comment I had written was relevant... and my accuser eventually accepted my explanation, so it's all just guesswork, ultimately.

I get stupid comments too and it's usually obvious they're from machines/bots. I often reply and tell them to stop spamming people. :/

People should stop begging for upvotes and write some quality content  instead. That's just my opinion

The worst thing I have now noticed and I only saw by accident is the number of comment vote fishers there are now. If you post your article then check who voted for it a lot of the early commenters don't actually vote, just comment. I thought they were all bots but some have replied to my questioning them on it.

One in particular yesterday became quite defensive and states that he read the post and liked it what was wrong with that? He didn't have to vote as it was not required.

I totally hear you man. There are many bots that are going around commenting random shit hoping they'd get paid. They even lie about upvoting you or following you! It pisses me off, especially when I see such comments get paid! Unfortunately, many users who are generous with upvoting comments fall for their trap...

Being new on steemit I receive significantly less comments than yourself, thinking about it it is actually because my content is worse rather than the age of the account. Nevertheless even I am starting to get these useless sometimes even spammy comments on my articles and I agree it is rather annoying.

From my point of view I spend a reasonable amount of time on my content and you obviously put in a large amount of effort, producing some of the best content on steemit. So when I receive one of those types of comments I take it kind of personally, I probably shouldn't but I consider it an insult that they didn't even bother to read the article. 

I would like to chalk it up as cultural differences but I am more inclined to put it down to the fact that there is money on the line and their belief that the more comments they post the more chance there is to make some. They seem to believe in the fallacy of quantity over quality.

I did start to respond to these types of comments with, "D-, not good enough please try harder! See me after class." However I am so fed up with being their primary school teacher that now I don't bother and just gloss over them.

I have come to the realisation that if all of those types of comments are just left to stagnate with no votes, then perhaps they will eventually get the picture and actually put the effort in.

P.S. The Indian Facebook video was amusing and actually pretty catchy. Going to have that tune stuck in my head whilst I'm coding today.

I really hope that more newcomers to the platform fully read this and apply it. And I've been having similar thoughts on this for a while now that it does come down to cultural differences and language barriers, probably for the most part. But I honestly also think that if a large majority of the users making such comments speak English as a second language or barely speak English at all, then odds are that they will not be able to read and duplicate the language in this post. Maybe it's worth contacting some of the main supporters of the various different language topics on the platform about this to get the word out :)

Well, I feel is that **without hard-work we should not expect good results**. In steemit I also didn't get success through my previous posts for which I did much hardwork. But I remained consistent and now I am getting fruits of my consistent hardwork.

But people are so lazy that they even bother read the article and **write a good thoughtful comment**.

What I do is that, I try to read most of the articles completely which are under 1500 words and well formatted. And those which are much larger, I simply scan them (*If the writer is smart enough in formatting the long post in the correct way*).

I also don't like beggars. **If our content and ideas are good, then we'll definitely get upvotes** without politics, as there are many good curators and writers like you, who at least upvote the comments of the users.

Well, **commenting is also an art** and comes with practice.

But yeah, I accept, most of the Indian users are lazy and spammers.

However, @alexbeyman your post will definitely show them the right path and correct way of posting anything. :D
