His real name was Ronald James Padavona. He was born on July 10, 1942. He chose his stage name Dio after the mafia member Johnny Dio. He began studying music at the age of five by playing the trumpet. Due to his Italian heritage, he also listened to a lot of opera as a child. He is a tenor, but has never taken singing lessons, instead training his voice through his breathing technique. An important fact is that he designed the metal horns. <br><br> Sadly, he succumbed to cancer at the age of 67. He made music history and will remain in our memories forever. <br><br> Dio was a member of various bands, including Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Dio and Heaven & Hell. He was successful with all of these bands. Rainbow was founded by Ritchie Blackmore so that he could play with Dio - so he could separate from Deep Purple. His lyrics are very philosophical and go deep into the moral and religious.
