Everything had added up on paper but the results, oh the results. It was all wrong. Who would know that splicing the genes of rabbits would create something so vile? They reproduce like wildfire moving across the land in waves eating everything in site. When they run out of vegetation they then developed a taste for human flesh. Who knows how many have already fallen, victim? The numbers are staggering. If the reports were correct, they were even developing a higher intelligence.

Their resistance to poison and gas is incredible, bombs proved little effect it had slowed them to some degree but their ability to burrow and their extremely fast gestation rate proves we will run out of bombs long before they are exterminated. Between them and us, this world is doomed, but we will never see it. We will be long gone before the end.

As I look up, I can hear screams from down the hall. They have chewed through the concrete barriers and the death screams of those being devoured by the wave of man-made mutations can be heard echoing in the halls.

My Attempt:

It was innocuous in the beginning, so gradual that no one even noticed. Just a few select people passing unnoticed through the crowds, wandering through markets and busy streets, making their way slowly but with sinister purpose towards the city center. They shook hands and clapped backs heartily in greeting - each friendly, ominous connection passing sure death to all those they touched. The elderly were infected first, then the young ones and  those in poor health.  The infection spread to all they touched, until hundreds, thousands and tens of thousands of people were instantly infected by the slightest contact.  The disease morphed at a deadly pace, targeting crucial organs with fatal precision.  Within days, even the heartiest, most vital ones were succumbing with mind-numbing speed, dropping in the streets with alarming accuracy.  The plan for annihilation was brilliant - complete destruction was imminent.

Sorry, I got nothin' (which is unusual in itself) but I do want to read more so get on with it! :)

Not only were the Tardigrades sentient. The indestructible little critters were incredibly well organized, far more so even than I anticipated when I wrote the report. How could I have known it went 'this' deep? I knew they were sentient when I wrote the report. Knew they cooperated. But an intergalactic empire, millions of years old? I should have recognized the signs, but how could I? My mind was just as resistant to accepting a smaller role for humanity as were the minds of those I was protecting my career against.  Somehow the Tardigrade empire. An intergalactic empire that had escaped humanities narrow view entirely even though Earth had been its primary stronghold in our solar system since long before our ancestors had crawled out of the oceans.  Somehow the empire had considered humanities continued disregard for natures needs as an act of war.
