Generaly speaking we tend to think that focus is good and distractions are bad.
Getting distracted means you lost your focus, being focused means you are distraction free. But focus and distractions are not good nor bad, their value completely depends on what they are pointing to.
For example, what if you just lost an important client, your best friend betrayed you, or the love of your life - and the person you have a family with- all of a sudden announces they're getting a divorce, and that is your main focus and all you can think of, is it still a good thing?
And in this case, would getting distracted be still a bad thing?
We tend to see focus as something we do, and distractions as something that just happens to us.
Because we like to associate with good and distance ourselves from bad, we tend to claim focus as ours, and deny any ties to distractions -failing to see that both require our active participation somehow.
And so, if focus is our merit, then distractions should be our responsibility.
Being focused or distracted, are both a state of mind, empty labels pointing to a similar concept, but described from a different perspective. It's the context that creates the content.
Distractions are a way to focus on something else, just as focus is a way to distract yourself from something else.
A hammer is not all good because it can build a house, just like a knife is not all bad because it can cut the deep; They're just tools looking for a way to be used and be useful.
When things are not going well, progress is the best way to distract yourself from negative thinking.
If you fail with something, make sure you do well somewhere else.
And that is going to bring a healthy balance in the way you see, not just the world but yourself inside it as well.
