For Everything There Is A First Time

# Introducing My New ~~Starship~~ Workspace

Well, hello and apologies for my absence over the past week, however, I think I have a pretty good excuse... 

Now, I won't lie... there were hurdles to jump BUT today, I am over-the-moon and so very, very proud to write this post since this will be the first one that I upload from MY BRAND NEW COMPUTER..!

Many of you already know, this was also my first time building a computer from scratch and I'm pretty sure you can imagine how accomplished I'm feeling right about now, having jumped over the hurdles to finish with the reward of a working computer and internet connection. Let me tell you, It was quite a relief to hit that power button for the first time and hear it fire up.

Hurdles? Oh yes, there were hurdles... 

1. Windows Or Linux? In the end, I decided on Windows 7 which made total sense cause I already had an installation disc on hand. Even though I spent a day exploring Ubuntu, I don't feel like I know enough about it to use it confidently and I'm already used to the Windows format, so... hurdle(clap) cleared(clap)

2. As I neared the end of the build however, I suddenly noticed the case didn't provide any bays for a CD drive (actually, this was the reason why I reconsidered and tested Ubuntu)... but E-V-E-N-T-U-A-L-L-Y, I created a boot-able Win7 flash drive and finally the 'Starting Windows' screen appeared and... hurdle(clap) cleared(clap)

3. This next one came in the form of a known bug with Windows 7 where you get to the 'language-selection' screen of the installation, only to find your keyboard and mouse have stopped working and you're unable to click through to continue the installation... hmm, they were both working a second ago in the bios settings but OK then..! Now, I may not know everything about computers but I do know where to find the information and/or drivers I need, so... hurdle(clap) cleared(clap)

4. But wait, there's more... Initially, I planned to re-use my network card from my previous computer but around the same time I noticed the 'missing drive bay', I also noticed that the card wouldn't t fit the new motherboard but no problem, I'll just use a wired connection until I can buy a new one and... hurdle(clap) cleared(clap)

5. Huh, what? Noooooooo, connection not recognised? [INSERT HUGE SIGH/GROWL] This of course meant *more* drivers, *more* reboots and *more* waiting for *more* downloads... I was definitely starting to feel a little defeated at this stage but just like a prayer, the drivers loaded and the internet connected with no further issues and ... final hurdle(clap) cleared(clap)

As soon as that first webpage loaded, I stood up and literally (yes, @r0nd0n, literally..!) jumped for joy and did a quick victory dance. 

It's been a very long time, since I've had a dedicated graphics card for gaming and I'm really keen to try out some of the online games that keep my (adult) children so well entertained. The only ones I've played in the past are Runescape and Second Life, other than that I'm pretty much a NOOB...! 

Currently, I'm playing SubNautica which I scored as a free download as recommended in a post (which I can't find a link for right now...) by @bengy who put me onto Epic Games (who BTW are still offering free downloads with a new game available every two weeks, if anyone else is interested)

If you **are** a gamer, please leave a comment and let me know any games you recommend as I really have no idea what's available and it would be a real shame to let this graphics card go to waste... lol

I'm enjoying at the moment:

- Darkest Dungeon (Dark, Strategy Gothic Dungeon Crawler with Permadeath... a lot like old school XCOM)
- Cities Skylines (Modern Sim City)
- Path of Exile (Modern Diablo 2) 

For the shiny graphics

- The Tomb Raider franchise reboot (Tomb Raider, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Shadow of the Tomb Raider) 
- Assassins Creed (not so good gameplay wise IMO, though!) 

Absolute Classic games on the PC as far as I'm concerned:

- Battletech - Mech Warrior in turn based strategy - this has a high learning curve though
- The Witcher games
- XCOM 2 - especially if you like turned based strategy and crying, a lot. The DLC makes it very replayable and enough to make you want to tear your heads out - its the Dark Souls of Strategy, essentially. 


And there's a whole lot more. I'm playing through my Steam library from A-Z and reviewing on my steem blog as I go. I own about 400+ PC games (I used to be a video games journalist)

Wow, that is quite an awesome list... and a video games journalist? I thought that was only the stuff of fantasy... that was my dream job haha - although I'm sure it had *some* downsides right?... I mean, surely, it wasn't all *that* good - please, please answer that question in a way that doesn't make me feel like I've wasted my life on a 'normal' job lolz. - only kidding, I'm sure it was still a 'job' with all the negative aspects that go hand in hand with working 9 to 5, but STILL very impressive.

Thanks so much @holoz0r, for such a good list, I will probably check out Cities Skylines first as Sim City was one of the first games I ever owned; and Mech Warrior is a title I haven't thought of in a loooong time too, I will make sure I check out your reviews too. Yes, it was a normal "job", except I was a sub-contractor to the site. Write x articles per day of x word count, manage the relationships with the PR execs from the Video Game Publisher companies, and then work on longer form editorial / review pieces. 

It wasn't exactly a 9-5 (especially around E3) - but after a while when you "drew the short straw" (ie, getting a really bad game for review) that sucked the fun out of it. There was a lot of controversy about gaming journalists not finishing games or exploring them in enough depth when I was doing the gig. That could suck the fun out of gaming.

The tax deductions were amazing, though :) 

On the whole, I would do it again, but I'd want to enhance my writing skills further before going back into it in a professional sense - which I don't forsee. I'd rather work for the denziens of Steem than some publisher with an exclusivity clause not allowing your work to be published elsewhere. :) 

Maybe I'll write a post about how the video game review / news industry worked when I was around it in the future. It's an interesting topic to reflect on a major part of my life.

Fun to read your post @alphaccino.art and hear about your "adventures!"  I've rebuilt enough computer hard drives to appreciate what you went through.  Definitely never "fun" (at least as I would define it), but you certainly end up with a feeling of accomplishment, after clearing all of the "hurdles."

Do you find yourself thinking *"yeah, great, but when am I going to next be able to apply all of this newfound knowledge?"*  That is always one of my thoughts, after completing any DIY project.

Hopefully, Astrid will not let you down.  At least, any time soon ... &#128521;

Thanks @roleerob, and yes, I feel like I've gained confidence and a great new skill-set although, I gotta SMH for not doing it years ago... 

Also, my closing line is a phrase that I heard as a teenager when I was really shy and very self-conscious. Living in a busy city meant using public transport everyday and you know when you're in public and you can see in your peripheral vision when someone is watching you...? this would make me feel really embarrassed BUT after hearing that phrase, I would remember to smile in those moments and it worked like a charm; helped me through some awkward times. 

These days when I'm in public, I make a point of acknowledging others and sharing a smile because you never know what effect that could have on someone's day (or life) :D

Well done on putting together the new rig :) I remember that feeling of accomplishment the first time I built mine XD (which I have done again recently after many years of Macs and that feeling sadly did not come back XD)

Hope you managed to get over all those driver installs and whatnot, they're a pain!

Thanks @ryivhnn, it was definitely a big win esp. after feeling so defeated when my laptop died. At the time, I didn't think I could even afford to replace it, let alone, going ahead and actually building one. And yeah, definitely one of my bucket list items that I can now cross off.

I haven't had any issues with Epic so far, although it does seem to be very slow, I haven't tried any other similar sites yet so I don't really have a comparison... any suggestions for games or sites?

Welcome back, OMG I'm so happy you did it 🙌, I knew you could your a smart cookie.
Getting going can be a pain in the butt with installing drivers, usually I just download them to a usb.
That issue with the keyboard and mouse is odd, I have never encountered that one.

It's all part of the learning curve, at least the network card is only a minor issue and they are like 5 bucks from msy anyway.
Now you have gone and built your own PC theres no going back, you will be building them from now on and not some computer company charging excessive prices.
That rig looks really good, and love the name Astrid :D I have never thought of naming my PC but I do name my cars and bikes.

Thanks so much, it's really good to be back (again lol). And you're right, I'm super happy about the whole experience and so glad that I can proudly cross that off my bucket list... although, I did have some scary moments when it came to connecting cables to the motherboard, I kept imagining a cartoon scene where I'd connect a cable to the wrong spot and the whole board would explode and just disintegrate into a puff of smoke - lol, but thank god *that* didn't happen.

Even when it came to installing the drivers, this only became painful because I always (*sub-consciously*) choose to do things back-to-front, the hard way and I could have saved myself from so many reboots if I'd just spent 5 mins planning (ALL) my drivers first but I'll certainly be better prepared next time.

And I'm glad you like the name, I've always named my cars too... Astrid was a play on AMD which in turn, reminded me of Amstrad so hence, Astrid - there's always a method behind my madness lolz...
