Part of my job when I was a teacher trainer required me to travel to schools in rural areas to supervise some of my teacher trainees. At times we team teach, at times, we work together to handle a class if the need arises. If you have been to rural schools in my country, it consists of a structure made of wood at many many access points for all sorts of 'visitors'.

I grew up in a small town and I have had my fair share of camping in the jungle. If and when there are any nasty visitors, it can be quite easy to get rid of them by myself. However, when I am in the midst teaching a class, things of course, can be a bit complicated.

### **In The Classroom...**
It was a beautiful morning and I was tasked with demonstrating how to control a primary year 2 class for my teacher trainee. On the day before, I spoke with my teacher trainee on how to adequately control the class. After hours of discussion and demonstration, I thought it best to demonstrate it to my trainee.

It was ten minutes through the class that a visitor arrived. Well, the visitor made a grand entrance through one of the students in the class's shirt. So imagine me happily introducing the lesson to the rest of the class when suddenly one student bolted out of his chair and started screaming, stripping his shirt and running out of the class. Of course, I was shocked, my grand demonstration to my trainee, ruined. As I stared at my class looking for answers, one of his friend shouted:

<center> **THERE'S A LIZARD IN HIS SHIRT!** </center>

What happened after that was chaos, the whole class ran out to see what was happening. At this point, I had lost control but I am the teacher trainer and if I were to lose my cool, it would be hard to supervise my teacher trainee who was watching the whole situation unfold. 


### **If You Find Yourself In a Similar Situation...**
If you do come across a similar situation as me, the first thing I did was to go with the flow. If my class was already outside, then outside I shall be. I left the class and by this time, the terrified lizard was somewhere in the boy's shirt or pants. I asked that class to step back while I looked for the lizard, got it out and ushered the class back to their seats. I assigned them a task while I took the lizard's victim outside of the class to check on him. He was emotionally stable. The next thing I did was to address the class.

I recap the rules with the class, one of them which was to ask for permission before leaving their seats. I told them that today's incident was unacceptable but let them off with a warning. Furthermore, I encouraged them to help each other in the event something similar happens again. It is not uncommon for snakes and centipede to wonder into the class. Hopefully, they don't go wondering into any unfortunate student's shirt. 

### **Conclusion**
It was a fun day though, my teacher trainee had questions about the incident and we went through a few interesting points. Namely, he was wondering why I did not punish the class. I thought that since this was one of those unique situations, perhaps the students should be let off with a warning. Furthermore, one of them has suffered enough and it made no sense punishing everyone but him. 

I paid some of the more senior teachers of the school, apparently they also get visits from wild boars too. Now, I wonder if there ever was a tiger that ventured too close... How about you? How would you have handled the situation? I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
