Desesperanza

Hopelessness

If I could feel anything, perhaps it would be the agonizing despair of failure. When success is imperative, a matter of life and death; defeat is not acceptable.

Thousands of years passed, in an endless journey through the dark emptiness of space, to achieve a goal, so remote and unattainable, that the mere possibility of success was implausible. And to achieve the impossible, to find that, even reaching the goal, one has failed, should only provoke hopelessness.

The hopelessness of seeing thousands of species die, which focused their hopes on a shot in the dark at a tiny target, at an unusual distance.

The despair of the death of hundreds of thousands of individuals, who were waiting for a call of encouragement, telling them that there was a possible future, in a remote part of the universe, and who perished before they received that message.

The despair of arriving after the long journey to an idyllic world, which could have been a new home for the orphans of a dead planet and knowing that, this paradise, will soon cease to be what it is.

The hopelessness of having to communicate the result of this failed mission, knowing that, very possibly, there will be no one to receive the message. And no one will ever know that, we tried until the end, but we did not succeed.

-This is the last transmission of the advanced colonizer ship Artemis, the objective of reaching the planet catalogued as PPH101 was achieved, the planet presents favorable conditions for terraforming, its atmosphere, climate and general conditions are almost compatible with life; however, a comet is on a direct collision course with the northern hemisphere of the planet, this will happen in thirty years Earth, counted from our arrival. This collision will make it uninhabitable; due to the speed, size and chemical composition of the comet.

Hopelessness...

-The journey that led us here has consumed almost all of our antimatter fuel; for that reason, it is not possible for the ship to explore the next, possibly habitable, planet whose location is contained in this message. Consequently, the ship will remain inactive on this planet awaiting the inevitable end of it.

Hopelessness...

-This is the end of the transmission, when closing it, all the systems of the Artemis will be deactivated and only the microwave emitter will remain active, retransmitting this message until its cobalt isotope battery is exhausted, or until it is destroyed in the indicated event. End of transmission.

If I could feel anything, it would surely be hopelessness.

HERBERT, the monitor android of the Artemis, deactivated all the ship's systems, including the life support of its embryo cargo, and was completely inactive, resting on the surface of a field of emerald green vitrified lava, on the shores of a lonely beach, where the sea was dragging small icebergs from a nearby glacier. In thirty years, that landscape would disappear completely, being razed by the magma coming from the planet's mantle, which would be exposed after the devastating impact.
