Making vertical planters, part 2
Hello, steemians, and welcome to the greenhouse, eh!

It's been a week since I've worked on these planters, and this afternoon seemed like a good time to get back to it. If you would like to read part one of this post, here's the link to it.
https://steemit.com/gardening/@amberyooper/making-vertical-planters-part-1

I've been wanting to get some strawberries planted in these, I had bought a package of strawberry roots to plant a while back and wanted to get them in the tower. The first thing I had to do was to plug the bottom of the tower so that the dirt doesn't just fall out of it. I had bought some parts when I bought the pipe to make the planters, so I was more or less ready to go. What I had bought was a floor drain insert that is used in the standard thick wall drain pipe. They fit loosely in this thin wall pipe, but I figured they would allow for good drainage and I could put screws through the side of the pipe to hold them in. I decided to use some landscape cloth to keep the dirt from falling through the slots in the bottom.
![DSCN8871.JPG](https://steemitimages.com/DQmWqFCnzaByrZ2PNYbjpAUJgkULRoRSvBFvPF9p9URzSJX/DSCN8871.JPG)

I doubled up the landscape cloth and laid it over the end of the drain insert, and pushed it into the end of the pipe. There was just enough extra room between the thinwall pipe and the plug insert with the landscape cloth that it fit snugly.
![DSCN8872.JPG](https://steemitimages.com/DQmeHHxKLmEWcKLQFukYP5qUCshkZ3aH84ZyKFnVg6K9PyB/DSCN8872.JPG)

I cut the extra landscape cloth away from the pipe, and then I drilled a couple of starter holes for the screws to hold the plug in, and then drove the screws in with my driver drill.
![DSCN8873.JPG](https://steemitimages.com/DQmNfB1Nx4gFmUbvUY3CasmQDnrDUz9QxddRQxCNQnyR2z9/DSCN8873.JPG)

Then it was on to filling the pipe and planting the strawberry roots. I knew it was going to be a messy job filling the pipe up so I used a tote to catch the dirt that spilled while pouring the dirt in the pipe. I basically filled the pipe to 1 plant opening and then used a stick to pack the dirt in a bit because this potting soil is really loose and I figured that watering it will compact it somewhat. I put one of the root balls into the plant opening and filled more dirt. I did all the plants this way.
![DSCN8875.JPG](https://steemitimages.com/DQmbLEfFySCLVkMiPsuX7szhgKcpw984QKSN5TXLwrpSgWr/DSCN8875.JPG)

I poured a little water in after each root was planted to help get the dirt wet through the entire planter, rather than trying to water the entire column after it was planted. After I was done planting all the openings, I stood the planter up against the center post of the greenhouse and tied the top of it to the post to keep it from falling over.
![DSCN8876.JPG](https://steemitimages.com/DQmchhAquXxdCQYGtim93SFT7MJwbUKiLf4r49vt7tLnJKx/DSCN8876.JPG)

I have no idea if these roots will grow or not, they were really dry when I put them in the planter. I guess time will tell. If they don't grow, I can always transplant some of the runners from my strawberry bed into the planter. The only problem with that is those plants are June bearing, and I want everbearing plants for the greenhouse. I can always buy some live plants and put them in. I think I'm going to have to do that for the other planter pipe anyway, so I guess I'll just have to wait and see on this planter.

Well, that's all I have for this post, I hope you found it interesting.

Thanks for stopping by and checking out my post, eh!

As always, feel free to leave a comment or a question if you would like.

May the Steem Force be with you!

Good job man, curious to see how this will turn out!
Btw, what are the black pipes in the last pic? Some sort of a thermal mass heater?

Yes, the black pipes are for thermal mass heat. I have salt water in them so they don't freeze as easily in the cold. They don't do anything in the winter because it's just too cold, but they seem to make a little difference in the spring and fall. Those are made with 4 inch plastic pipe, I wish I could get 6 inch pipe, I think they would be more effective if they held more water.

Even if they don't do anything to heat the space in the winter I think they would help against temp swings at least a bit.
Have you looked at soil pipes(might be also called drainage pipes)? I wanted 6 inch pvc pipe but couldn't find it easily either and then found the soil pipes would do the trick - the standard size is 6 inches.

Ooooooo very nice! That floor drain was a great idea and looks awesome. Since our strawberries are just hanging out waiting for a place to be planted, this just might be what we should try! Thanks for the tutorial!

You're welcome!
You can probably buy the stackable planters and use them also. I thought about it but I've kind of had my hands full with all this other stuff. I should go and see if I can find a set of the stackable planters locally, hopefully they're not too expensive.
