Learning New Things! Making Some Wine!

I set out to learn how to make wine. It seemed like an easy task so I decided to try it. I had been playing with it for a little while as we had an old timer come over and help me out, by showing me how to do it with some fruit he was fermenting into wine for himself. I watched some videos on YouTube and got up the nerve to try it myself. I went out and got some stuff to start out with.

The first thing I got was some bungs and some airlocks. I could have just covered the bottles or buckets with the lids and just not tighten them down or justed a tea towel over them but I wanted it to be sealed off, so other stuff would not get in the mead as it fermented.

I got some yeast made for making wine and such, I could have used just plain old bread yeast from the store but I wanted to try it out and see how it worked. The old timer just used bread yeast and it seems to work just fine. I just wanted to see if there is any difference or not.

I got some 100% juice and started with that and I divided it into smaller bottles so I had a better chance of one of them working out for me. It was a 96 oz bottle and I divided it up into two bottles with 48 oz each. You have to have some headroom so if the yeast foams up it has some place to go other than all over whatever it is sitting on. Would be kinda messy to clean up.

I also set up a batch of what they call a wine base which is just fermenting water and the yeast and sugar will make the water an alcohol base. We will just add some kool-aid flavors to it and make it any flavor we want. It is just the little packets of kool-aid you buy at the store for .24 cents a piece. It is a learning experience and it can be fun.

This is just a start for me as I have already learned some more things to do that will make the wine even better. If you go to a brewing shop they will sell you everything in the store and tell you bread yeast will not work and you have to have all these special things to make wine. All of that is not really necessary, unless you just want it, as you are just brewing it for your own wine to drink. If you were selling it or what to get all the stuff it is fine but I am just doing it for a hobby and it takes my mind of all the struggles that are on my mind and just helps me relax, really so if it turns out as a good wine. LOL.

Here is what I do most of the time. I will just get a 64 oz bottle of any 100% juice and pour out 16 oz so it has room for the yeast to foam. I just drink that juice as I make the wine. Then I add one and a half cups of just plain table sugar and shake it up till all of it dissolves in the juice. I then add a 1/2 teaspoon of bread yeast, and just gently shake it a couple of times and loosely put on the lid and put it in a dark warm place for about 3 weeks or until it quits bubbling. If it is cooler it will take longer to finish the process of becoming wine. As I said I have learned a few other things and I will share them in later posts. I have had a couple of them, disasters and I tossed the wine. The guy that has been helping me told me next time call him first and we would try to save it. It was because there was not enough sugar in the mead and it did not work out. Live and learn I guess.

It is fun to make. I hope this turns out, I will do an update on the wine when it is done. It is kinda chilly here for the last couple of days so I have it all wrapped up trying to hold the temp to 70 degrees or so. It is bubbling along. lol

Oh I love the bubbles and the _burps_

Next year I want to forage up TONS of dandelions to make some wine. I didn't have enough this year as I did too many dandelion projects here.

Me too! I havê lost a couple of batches but just keep trying and I will get it right sooner or later. I hope sooner though. lol I want to get this right in the small amounts and move up to 5 gallon batches.
