Our Lord was giving them a lesson about prayer, specifically, about faith in prayer. They were amazed at the effects of the fig tree's curse and He told them that their problem was that they did not have faith to believe that God could act in such a miraculous way.

Obviously, we are not expected to walk around cursing fig trees or trying to literally remove mountains. In Psalm 121: 1, the psalmist says: "I will raise my eyes to the mountains: where will my help come from?" I do not think he was implying that his help would come from the mountains, because he added, in verse 2: "My help comes from the Lord, who made the heavens and the earth." I think there are more important things to do than try to move mountains or make figs dry. I mean to proclaim the Gospel of Christ and spread the Word of God so that the Spirit of God can use it: this is a true miracle. When these clay lips express something that The Spirit of God can use to transform a life, it implies the kind of faith that I desire to possess. What we need is faith to believe that God can use His Word, and that He will do so.

It is clear that the religious leaders were becoming increasingly offensive. It is significant that they did not question what Jesus was doing. They had no basis to deny the reality of the miraculous events that He performed. They were only questioning his authority.</center>
