This story is about the early times of space travel when no creature was thinking to going into the Space. Humans had just succeeded in sending rockets to space. It was impossible to send humans to these rockets, before sending the humans, animals were selected for find the adverse conditions of space travel.
In the streets of Moscow, Laika was walking with stray dogs, she was only three years old and she had no idea about what was going to happen with her in the coming time. She is about to become the first animal to go into the space.
On the other hand, the Soviet Union successfully sent the world's first rocket SPUTNIK-1 into the space, in which there was no living creature. After this success, the Soviet Union wanted to make the world shock after doing something bigger again.
Planners decided that this time a dog was sent to the space, this decision was taken so hastily because of that Soviet rocket engineers had only 4 weeks to design and manufacture the spacecraft and no proper way was tested.
That space shuttle was named SPUTNIK-2, which was specially designed for a dog. In which there was an oxygen generator, a carbon dioxide absorber, fan to keep the dog cool, food and water for a week, and a bag to collect the Feces.
The cabin of SPUTNIK-2 was too small that the dog could not stand or turn.
Now SPUTNIK-2 was ready to fly, so there was Just needed a dog. Soviet scientists chose the street dogs only because they have ability to face strong cold and strength to tolerate hunger.
Laika was roaming around the street with other dogs and she was selected for this risky project. Laika was different from other dogs, her nature was very quiet and she was very beautiful.
After catching the Laika, Scientists were start training to her, because the cabin of the rocket was very small, so the Laika was kept in the same small cage for 20 days. Now the Laika's training had been completed and she was ready to go into space. This time was a pleasure for humans but not for Laika because humans had invented the way to go into space but not to come back, means that Laika would go into space but would never return to Earth.
Before the tragic consequence of sending him to space, a Soviet scientist took him to his home and gave him an opportunity to play with his children.
Now there was left only short time for Laika to stay alive. After that Laika was put in a very small cabin of SPUTNIK-2 and she was bound by the chain so that she could not stand up or could not move.
At this stage, Laika was kept for 3 days so that Laika became familiar with its space shuttle.
November 3 1957 Now that day came and SPUTNIK-2 was ready to fly.
Before the final lift off, a technician, who closed the door of Laika's cabin, did the kiss on her nose and prayed for her safe journey, knowing that now she will never come back.
Shortly after that SPUTNIK-2 took off to the space. But after entering the space due to technical failure, one part of the rocket did not separate from SPUTNIK-2. Due to which the temperature of the cabin of Laika began to increase and the heartbeat of Laika reached 103 to 240.

Then on April 15, 1958, with the body of Laika, SPUTNIK-2 again entered the Earth's atmosphere and was burned to ashes.
In 2008, the Russian authorities built a small monument in honor of Laika. Near the place where Laika was trained. It is shown in the monument that a dog stands on a rocket that is Laika.

*असल में लाइका की कहानी बहुत ही दर्दनाक और दुखद है तो आइए जानते हैं लाइका के बारे में।*
यह कहानी अंतरिक्ष यात्रा के प्रारंभिक समय की है जब कोई भी प्राणी पृथ्वी से बाहर वायुमंडल में जाने की सोच भी नहीं रहा था। इंसानो ने अभी-अभी अंतरिक्ष में रॉकेट भेजने में सफलता हासिल की थी। इन रॉकेटों में इंसानों को भेजना तो असम्भव था, इंसानों को भेजने से पहले अंतरिक्ष यात्रा के प्रतिकूल परिस्थिति को जानने के लिए जानवरों को चुना गया साल 1957 जगह मॉस्को, रशिया।
मास्को की गलियों में लाइका आवारा कुत्तों के साथ घूम रही थी तब वह सिर्फ तीन साल की थी और उसे कोई अंदाजा भी नहीं था कि उसके साथ क्या होने वाला है। आने वाले समय में वह अंतरिक्ष में जाने वाली पहली जानवर बनने वाली है।
उधर सोवियत यूनियन के द्वारा दुनिया का पहला रॉकेट SPUTNIK-1 अंतरिक्ष में सफलतापूर्वक भेज दिया गया था जिसके अंदर कोई भी जीवित प्राणी नहीं था। इस सफलता के बाद सोवियत यूनियन यह चाहता था कि वह दोबारा कोई बड़ा कारनामा करके दुनिया को चौंका दें।
योजनाकारों ने फैसला किया कि इस बार एक कुत्ते को अंतरिक्ष में भेजा जाए, इस फैसले को इतनी जल्दबाजी में लिया गया कि सोवियत रॉकेट इंजीनियरों को वह अंतरिक्ष यान जो एक जिंदा प्राणी को पहली बार पृथ्वी की कक्षा में ले जाने वाला था उसको डिजाइन और निर्माण करने के लिए सिर्फ 4 हफ्तों का समय मिला और कोई ढंग का परीक्षण भी नहीं किया गया था।
उस अंतरिक्ष यान का नाम रखा गया SPUTNIK-2 जिसे खासकर एक कुत्ते के लिए डिज़ाइन किया गया था। जिसमें एक ऑक्सीजन जनरेटर, एक कार्बन डाइऑक्साइड अब्सॉरबेर, कुत्ते को ठंडा रखने के लिए फैन, एक हफ्ते के लिए खाना और पानी, और मल कलेक्ट करने के लिए एक बैग रखा गया।
SPUTNIK-2 का केबिन भी इतना छोटा था कि कुत्ता ना तो खड़ा हो सके और ना ही पलट सके।
अब SPUTNIK-2 उड़ान भरने के लिए तैयार था जरूरत थी तो बस एक कुत्ते की। सोवियत वैज्ञानिकों ने इसके लिए गली के आवारा कुत्तों को ही चुना क्योंकि उनमें तीव्र ठंड और भूख बर्दाश्त करने की ताकत होती है।
इस जोखिम भरे प्रोजेक्ट के लिए गली में ही घूमती हुई लाइका को चुना गया। लाइका बाकी कुत्तों से अलग थी, उसका स्वभाव बहुत ही शांत और देखने में बहुत ही सुंदर थी।
लाइका को पकड़ने के बाद उसकी ट्रेनिंग शुरू हुई क्योंकि रॉकेट का केबिन बहुत ही छोटा था इसलिए लाइका को भी 20 दिनों तक उतने ही छोटे पिंजरे में रखा गया। अब लाइका की ट्रेनिंग भी पूरी हो चुकी थी और वह अंतरिक्ष में जाने के लिए तैयार थी यह समय इंसानों के लिए खुशी का था पर लाइक के लिए नहीं क्योंकि उस समय इंसानो ने अंतरिक्ष में जाने का तरीका तो इजात कर लिया था पर वापस आने का नहीं, मतलब लाइका अंतरिक्ष में जाएगी पर वापस कभी पृथ्वी पर लौट नहीं पाएगी।
उसके दुखद अंजाम से अनजान लाइका को अंतरिक्ष में भेजने से पहले एक सोवियत वैज्ञानिक उसे अपने घर ले कर गए और उसे अपने बच्चों के साथ खेलने का मौका दिया।
अब लाइका के पास जिंदा रहने के लिए बहुत ही कम समय बचा था, उसके बाद लाइका को SPUTNIK-2 के बहुत ही छोटे से कैबिन में डाल दिया गया और उसे वहां चैन से बांध दिया गया जिससे वह खड़ी ना हो सके और ज्यादा हिल डुल ना पाए।
इस अवस्था मे लाइका को 3 दिनों तक रखा गया था जिससे कि लाइका अपने अंतरिक्ष यान से परिचित हो जाए।
नवंबर 3 1957 अब वह दिन आ गया था और SPUTNIK-2 उड़ने के लिए तैयार था।
फाइनल लिफ्ट ऑफ से पहले एक तकनीशियन ने लाइका की केबिन के दरवाजे को बंद करते समय उसकी नाक पर किस किया और उसके सुरक्षित यात्रा की दुआ कि, यह जानते हुए कि अब वह कभी वापस नहीं आने वाली।
उसके कुछ ही देर बाद SPUTNIK-2 लाइका को लेकर तीव्र गति से अंतरिक्ष की ओर रवाना हो गया। लेकिन तकनीकी खराबी के कारण अंतरिक्ष में दाखिल होने के बाद रॉकेट का एक हिस्सा SPUTNIK-2 से अलग नहीं हुआ। जिसकी वजह से लाइका के केबिन का तापमान बढ़ने लगा और लाइका की दिल की धड़कन 103 से 240 तक पहुंच गई।
*इससे यही अंदाजा लगाया जा सकता है कि वह कितनी घबराई हुई थी और गर्मी से जूझ रही थी।*
**3 घंटो तक मौत से जूझने के बाद, धीरे-धीरे उसके कैबिन का तापमान इतना बढ़ गया कि 5 घंटे के बाद लाइका के सेंसर से कोई भी सिग्नल नहीं आया और लाइका की दुखद मौत हो गई।**
लाइका की मौत के बाद SPUTNIK-2 ने 162 दिन तक अंतरिक्ष में रहकर पृथ्वी के 2570 चक्कर लगाए। उसके बाद अप्रैल 15 1958 को SPUTNIK-2 लाइका के मृत शरीर के साथ पृथ्वी के वायुमंडल में फिर से दाखिल हुआ और जल कर राख हो गया।
साल 2008 में रसिया के अधिकारियों ने लाइका के सम्मान में एक छोटा सा स्मारक बनवाया। उसी जगह के पास जहां पर लाइका को ट्रेनिंग दी गई थी। स्मारक में दिखाया गया है कि एक कुत्ता रॉकेट के ऊपर खड़ा है जो कि लाइका हैं।
