It is an American thing.  The NCAA and NFL brands of football make no sense to the rest of the world's nations, and can you blame them?

Then there's Australian Rules Football, which is closer to rugby than American Football.  Players don't even wear equipment, just clothes, footwear, and protection for the family jewels.  Not even helmets!  Give it a view if you can find it on TV; it can be jaw-dropping.

That reminds me....

The MLS season is timed different from the _futbol_ seasons in most countries.  This makes it difficult for players to participate in international competition such as UEFA Cup, _Copa Libertadores_, and World Cup qualifiers.  This scheduling discrepancy has historically hindered MLS and its ability to draw top-level players in their prime.
