Our kids will always be our kids no matter their age. Mums and dads are forever bound to do the best for their kids. Whatever it takes, nothing is too hard! All through the 13 school years parents oversee their kids journey from prep to the end of grade 12 in control with decision making, protecting, nurturing and supporting them. Every parent I know has futuristic goals ranging from good grades, to athletic sporting skills to post schooling opportunities. It is very normal. <center></center> All the while, parents strive to keep talking and checking in on the emotional and mental well being as they grow from young kids to adolescents. Happy loving relationships can never be underestimated. But, all of a sudden and without warning the young people finish school assuming control of their future. They might make choices that differ to their parents wishes and dreams. They may choose to have a gap year between school and tertiary study or working or perhaps venture career paths their parents did not foresee or want. <center></center> What if a young person finishes first year at university or trade and decides to travel and explore the world. The mum and dad did not see this coming. Does the parent say I am not going to let you do this? Would this work? My answer is probably not and is it worth the angst and fighting? Parents are sure to vary with their reactions but the sensible choice is for parents to readjust the views. Acceptance is far more rewarding than non-acceptance. Keeping good relationships is a must. Flexibility is the key. Rigidity is a no winner. If the focuses has been on developing emotional intelligence during the growing years, mums and dads might be feeling confident and positive at hearing the young person't announcement. <center></center> While intellectual abilities are important for learning achievement and getting good grades, raising kids that are empathetic, resilient, sensible with good social communication skills is highly likely to set up the kids for a happy successful life personally and professionally. Whatever your kids do they will be okay. If you have done this as a parent be assured you have done good. It is the best gift a parent can give.
