Over the Speed Limit

A funny thing happened on the way to work yesterday. I was driving along a little faster than I should have been or even needed to be, when the light turned yellow. Instead of slowing down and stopping, I hurried through the light. Sure enough, there sitting on the side of the road was a police car. I got that 'caught with my hand in the cookie jar' feeling like most of us do when we see the police.

With a sense of guilt and dread I stepped on the breaks and glanced down at my speedometer. Then I glanced over at the police officer and was surprised to see that it was my son, Max. I had forgotten that he had a new police car with the yellow and black decals as opposed to the all blue decals on the old car.

I laughed out loud and drove the speed limit the rest of the way to work. Max was busy assisting, warning, ticketing or arresting someone else. I’m pretty sure, had he noticed me, he would not have given me the ticket I deserved, but it sure made me think. I thought back to all those times I told Max how important it was to obey the rules. I remembered telling him as he got older that he had to obey all the rules, not just the ones he liked or ones that suited his purpose.

Now, I was the one needing reminded. Not just of speeding and traffic violations, but of my life in general. I need to honor and glorify God, and I need to obey his commandments – all of them – not just the ones I like or the ones that suit my purpose. Forgive me, Lord, for picking and choosing what rules I obey.

Today’s smile: When I die, I want to go peacefully in my sleep like my friend did – not screaming like the passengers in his car did!
