Get along with your teacher - Tips for learners

**A great advantage of getting along with your teachers are that you will feel relaxed in their classes and not be afraid to ask questions and learn more from them.**

Learning to get along with different teachers, can also help us in future to learn and deal with different types of people in our work place or that we meet. You will not always like everybody, but that does not mean you cannot be decent and 'get along'.

**If you have a good relationship with a teacher, they can also be the adult you will go to if you have problems like struggling to learn or being bullied**.

### Teachers are there to help you, that is why they became teachers, so for them to see that you enjoy their classes or feel that you can approach them and listen to them and have respect for them, will mean a lot.

'Getting along' with a teacher means that you have **mutual respect for one another** and the teacher wants to teach you and you are open to learn and ask questions. Many times children will not like a teacher, because he/she is too strict, but if you just give them a chance, you will see that they are strict for a reason. They do not want disruptions in their classes, so that everybody gets the chance to learn. A teacher can be strict but fair and approachable.

Sometimes you just need to **accept them the way they are** and do what is asked of you, then you will stay out of trouble and you will learn. 'Getting along' does not mean you have to love them and try and be their favorite, it means that you both have enough respect for one another to make it through a day and learn from one another.

**A good teacher's main objective is to teach and help kids, but in order for them to do that, they need the learners to do their part as well**. If you are out to cause trouble in every class, you will be known as the 'troublemaker' and will either get into trouble with every teacher or be ignored. This will make you feel like an 'outcast' and you will start believing that every teacher is against you, when in fact you are bringing it on yourself.

It can happen that you and your teacher have a 'personality clash'. That can happen with any two people, but if the teacher is professional, they will try and overcome this and if you do your part, it will be easier. You do not have to like one another very much, but you can tolerate each other and learn from it.

If the situation does not get better, and you do not get along with the teacher, speak to your parent about this problem and what exactly bothers you about the teacher. Are they too strict, do they not have respect for you, do they not help you learn etc. Your parents can set up a meeting with the teacher and try and resolve the issues.

Remember a story always has two sides and it can either be true that the teacher is not fair towards you, or it can be that you are not doing your part.

### You cannot expect a teacher to treat you with respect if you show none from your side.

### You as the student have a responsibility not only towards yourself, but also towards the teacher

- you need to be prepared to be taught when you come into class
- you need to have your books and writing materials needed
- you must not speak to your friends when the teacher is talking
- you must ask the teacher a question if you do not understand something
- if you ask a question or want to tell the teacher something, put up your hand and speak in a decent, respectful manner
- show the teacher that you have respect and want to learn

### If you do all of these things, you will get along with the teacher. It will maybe still not be your favorite teacher or subject, but if you can get along with one another for the period, if can just as well turn out to become an enjoyable experience.

Respect is very important so that a relationship between student and teacher can be as satisfactory as possible in the teaching-learning process.

Greetings and thank you for your contribution.
