How to write an essay - Information for learners

<h3>Not everybody is a writer and some of us struggle to write a story or essay, but the more you do it the better you will get. &nbsp;There are certain steps that you can follow to make it easier for you.</h3>

<p>Firstly you will choose a topic that you like - you must also choose the topic according to your knowledge and vocabulary. &nbsp;For instance, if they give you a topic on animals or computers and you do not know a lot about computers, do not choose that topic, because you will not be able to express your ideas. &nbsp;Even if you like computers but only have a limited knowledge on it.</p>
<p><strong>The more you read, the better your knowledge and vocabulary will be and the easier it will be for you to write about a given topic. &nbsp;</strong></p>
<h3>You need to follow the following 4 steps if you want to write a good essay (especially if you are new at this)</h3>

  <li>Think about the topic (planning)</li>
  <li>Arrange your thoughts in logical order - nobody wants to read something that is mixed up and they do not understand (structure)</li>
  <li>Draft and write the essay (The essay needs a catchy introduction, a body and a closing that ties everything together)</li>
  <li>Edit the written/typed version (read it again, have a look at language use, punctuation, tenses and spelling)</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Planning is the most important step.</strong> &nbsp;This will serve as the framework of your essay. &nbsp;Think about what you want to say and remember to stick to the topic.</p>
<p>During your planning you must think about how you will approach your topic - this means you will decide are you going to give facts or are you going to tell a story. &nbsp;</p>
<p>You must also use descriptive words and describe the topic or compare or comment on the topic. &nbsp;If they give you a topic for instance "Trees", do you want to write about the history and use of trees or maybe why we need trees? <strong>&nbsp;You decide on your own approach towards the topic.</strong></p>
<p>Once you know what to say,<strong> you are going to start arranging your thoughts in logical order</strong>. &nbsp;You will now decide which information will go together in one paragraph and in which order you will present the information.</p>
<p><strong>Your essay must always start with an introductory paragraph</strong>. &nbsp;In this paragraph you are going to make sure that you introduce your topic and main content that the reader will know what it is about. &nbsp;It gives a general impression of the specific facts or reasoning which will follow. <strong>&nbsp;The most important part is that it must capture the interest of the reader and they want to read the rest.</strong></p>
<p><strong>Each paragraph will have its own main idea</strong> - if you must write about your dog, you will for instance write about what he/she looks like, how you look after your dog, what your dog likes to do and why you love having a dog. &nbsp;Each of these ideas will be in a separate paragraph and will be the main idea on which you will give extra information.</p>
<p>Remember you must give a logical development of your main ideas and they must be linked to one another.</p>
<p><strong>The closing paragraph is the last paragraph </strong>of your essay and must be a final statement, a conclusion of what was said in the previous parts of your essay. DO NOT introduce a new main idea in your closing paragraph.</p>

  <li>Once you have written your essay, edit it and make sure it is neat and in a logical order without spelling or grammar errors.</li>
  <li>Do not start your sentences with conjunctions or keep on writing 'and then and then'. &nbsp;</li>
  <li>Check your punctuation and do not write very long sentences. &nbsp;Differ the length of your sentences and rather start a new sentence than using 'and then' over and over.</li>
  <li>Stick to the same tense&nbsp;</li>
  <li>Do not write too long paragraphs</li>
  <li>Avoid bad language and too much slang.</li>
</ul>
<h3>The key to writing a good essay is practice, practice, practice. &nbsp;The more you do it, the easier it will get and start coming to you naturally and you will even start enjoy doing it.</h3>
