Turtles - Information, a story and questions for learners

What carries its home on its back, and can pull their head and legs into it if they want to sleep or are in danger? A tortoise? A turtle? Are they not the same thing?

Wait now I am confused.

Lets gather some information and learn more about the turtle (Teenage mutant ninja turtles hahaha).

Turtle vs. Tortoise. Tortoises and turtles are both reptiles from the order of Testudines, but in different classification families. The major difference between the two is that tortoises dwell on land, while turtles live in the water some or nearly all of the time

You can read more about it here.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EIffdbFZMPQ

source

A turtle spend most of its time in water and it is a reptile. Like all reptiles they are coldblooded. This means that their body temperature will change as the temperature around them change. They have adapted to survive in very cold water and are able to survive in different ways.

Read more here on how they do it.

Just like the tortoise, the turtle also has a shell, much lighter than the tortoise's shell, for them to swim easier, but also very hard and are like a shield that can protect the soft body.

The turtle has an upper shell called the 'carapace' and also a lower shell called the 'plastron'. Not all of the turtle species can pull their heads into their shells when attacked

Turtles are actually dinosaurs, because the were around on earth already 215 million years ago.

The largest turtle that we know of is the leatherback sea turtle. All female sea turtles go out on land dig a hole and lay their eggs. When the babies hatch, they have to fend for themselves and find their way to the ocean. Many get stuck in the plants, or walk the wrong way and die because of the hot sun or get eaten by birds or other predators. Luckily the female lays a lot of eggs and some of the babies do make it to the ocean to grow up.

A sea turtle gets it water from the sea but they have special glands that remove the salt from the water.

It is very important that we protect the turtles because many of the species are endangered. Plastic is a huge problem in our oceans and it harms a lot of turtles and other sea live.

Do research of the dangers of plastic for marine life.

Think of ways you can use less plastic.

Why do sea turtles eat the plastic?

Watch the video and answer the questions.

How long have sea turtles been around?

Explain the life cycle of a sea turtle.

Why would you say that sea turtles are strong since they survive so many odds that are against them? What things can happen to them?

In your own words re-tell what you have learned from this video.

Make your own summary or a information pamphlet.
