Yesterday Evening we experienced our Longest Blackout
Quite early in the evening, 25 minutes after we launched the rice, the electricity went off in our building. Luckily we were able to eat something hot as the meal was ready. I don't know when it came back on, as we had already gone to bed.

The second 'fortunately' is that after talking here a few months ago about equipment that could protect us from power cuts and shortages, I had put part of my project into action. At that time (it was November 2022) I bought a lantern that can be charged by the mains, via a solar battery or through the integrated crank. You can find the details in this [article](https://peakd.com/hive-114308/@anttn/do-you-have-special-tools-to-protect-you-from-energy-shortages). To be precise, with this Goal Zero lantern, one minute of cranking is about 10 minutes of low power lighting and the battery can also be used to charge small electronic devices.

My girlfriend looked at me with funny eyes - *as she often does ^^* - not really knowing why I had just bought a portable LED light bulb when we live in a flat in the so-called City of Light. However, last night, when the whole neighborhood was plunged into darkness, I proudly took out my lantern. And I can tell you that even she was very proud haha !
So we ate our rice by lantern, and at minimum power, with only one side lit out of two, that's what we got. *Not bad, is it ?* The manufacturer announces 320 hours of autonomy at this power, that is to say thirteen full days, but I don't trust these estimates. So I decided to take my camera out to make a little report...

After a few pictures, I also made a call on my phone after looking up the emergency numbers of our energy supplier. As you might expect, it's much easier and quicker to sign up for a contract with them than to get help. After about twenty minutes of strange jingles and telephone labyrinths where you have to type in '1' or '2' depending on your situation, a robotic voice announced: "In the district of..., streets..., the electricity is cut off, estimated time of restoration of the network : "unknown" and then : "Thank you for your call". And then our exciting exchange stopped... without me cutting.
![DSC_0020.JPG](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/anttn/23vhno1XTeQiSUnisCSyM3jKUHEZ4zMf6iTqdkEgRbz9W7uNTf4EJaGi4N65Zkhi4srYg.JPG)
After getting almost no response, was it reasonable to attempt an image with the flash ? I still don't know but no doubt the future will tell ! At least we will have this in our archives :)
![DSC_0035.JPG](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/anttn/23u5bkB8MaeircjeSyCfz1cA6WVorV25J9hqGxPzsz59UfBbbE4doGFdeyLXo9VvRCHW9.JPG)
To continue to test this additional light, I went to annoy our plants which, fortunately, are used to it with me ! To be precise, I'm still at the minimum level of the lantern, I tried some images with more light intensity and a higher shutter speed, but it didn't render as well...
![DSC_0046.JPG](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/anttn/23u5bFJ3zFFYB4jCdxkUyeMDXzjo2nFtEvhBZtw4WjqoXxDxX5wiYE3ezR8G7y8a9yzk3.JPG)
Just after this last picture and a few others, my *Philodendron Monstera* told me I'd better go to bed, or at least let them sleep. For once, I thought he was right and after half an hour of reading, we did indeed go to bed. In the morning, the energy was back, in my body as well as in our neighborhood, building, flat !

I know that in some countries, power cuts and lack of electricity are sometimes the norm and that is why I will not complain. It is quite benign and even interesting to observe when it happens like this, and it should make us question more about our addiction to this electricity that makes many of our objects work.

For my part, I think every day about becoming more resilient and independent, i.e. generating my own electricity as needed and having a whole range of equipment and utensils that do not require any energy other than that of the body.

#### Do you have any experiences, strategies and possible devices in case of power cuts ?
I'll be happy to hear all about it in the comments ! Thank you for reading, and I hope you enjoyed this article and its pictures :)

Take good care of yourself and see you soon,

![DSC_0006.JPG](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/anttn/23uFKc9BqQCUMpMYGQjzYGx1Lm5wq5ssXR2Qua1sJ9XZhYNeFc4imLxb7FePewraJMUxJ.JPG)
![DSC_0025.JPG](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/anttn/23u5xed8aqJuTytq25EQ1fqNLF1Uqs7qH8Gz791EoUDb9s1eTUdztka8s6c2mLBh6ovo2.JPG)

![DSC_0028.JPG](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/anttn/23tRxWfvkWeuEupFQUXN7YbHHHT4JGePkv3FYByD83JujGakAkADXWAFqfXPNoh9zGC8o.JPG)
![DSC_0020.JPG](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/anttn/23vhno1XTeQiSUnisCSyM3jKUHEZ4zMf6iTqdkEgRbz9W7uNTf4EJaGi4N65Zkhi4srYg.JPG)
![DSC_0035.JPG](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/anttn/23u5bkB8MaeircjeSyCfz1cA6WVorV25J9hqGxPzsz59UfBbbE4doGFdeyLXo9VvRCHW9.JPG)
![DSC_0046.JPG](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/anttn/23u5bFJ3zFFYB4jCdxkUyeMDXzjo2nFtEvhBZtw4WjqoXxDxX5wiYE3ezR8G7y8a9yzk3.JPG)

<3

The only blackouts I like are those I know of in advance, somehow I always find myself not prepared having downloaded something off of netflix to keep myself entertained throughout it or having something to read/listen to.

Haha, but it’s quite rare to know them in advance..! It makes me thinking of one of your recent articles where you talked about pirating movies or games, I always have something prepared for this kind of situation... ^^ even if it’s just a documentary downloaded in .mp4

Btw, the one of yesterday was about Onkalo the Finish nuclear waste deposit site, really interesting..! I obviously recommend it to you :)

First of all, I love all the images you took, they are incredible really. Back to what you talked about, here in my country it is a norm, hehe, so most of us already have different things in place to fill up for the dark days.

At home we have about three different led lights on standby for the dark night. It's a good thing the light is still a little consistent and you can work with it but not here, we do buy generators too, hehe.

I can relate with this experience. We had no electricity for 2 MONTHS! because typhoon Odette destroyed everything way back December 2022. It was not really a struggle because we had our own water supply at home and the malls were open so that people can charge their devices.

luckily, generators were available (how fortunate to those who can afford it) We also used solar powered devices.

Wow, two months is another story ! But as you say, water is much more important because it is truly vital !

The generators were running on petrol, I guess ? I think I'll go more for solar panels, but they don't work well in winter... not enough sunlight ^^ !

Good day to you 😊

This.

I have had some power outages, recently, in my current house ( as its electricity is off-grid/ solar powered and the batteries aren't that strong + grey/ rainy Winter days ). It made me realize that we are too addicted to electricity and that it disturbs our sleep cycle, makes us sleep and wake up at unnatural times. It would, in fact, be healthier - and kind of nice - to plan a candle light evening, regularly, to connect more to nature and each other / ourselves. It makes you kind of go back in time.

[I will be moving](https://peakd.com/hive-196233/@vincentnijman/an-update-on-my-housing) to a small town, very soon, and am curious how this is gonna feel after 4.5 years in the countryside. I believe my new place also has solar ( at least in Summer )

P.S. That 'lighthouse' looks and seems kind of cool, but I can't help but wonder where it's produced. China/ Hongkong? or actually in France/ Europe?

Ah the return to the city, it's good to start with a small one! We are looking for our house in the country ;)

I completely agree with you about the disruption this form of energy has caused! We'd better go to bed with the night and get up with the first rays. That's what I'm trying to do at the moment... The morning hours are terribly pleasant and effective from the point of view of energy.

I'll have to check, but I'm afraid this one was assembled in China, it's actually quite complicated to do otherwise for some things. But I think that will change in the next few years! To be continued...!

Have a nice weekend, and for your next return to the city ✌️

I might get myself a machine like that. Yeah, returning to the city but it's more like a village, in all honesty, almost countryside.

My ongoing struggle. I still find that hard, even 6 and a half years after having quit my last day job.

China it is, alas.

Hasta la vista! ;<)
