Sewing Panamanian Baby Doll Quilts for the Cousins - Needle Work Monday

Since we are going to see our family when we take a trip to Texas this summer, my girlie wanted to make something for each of her cousins. I'm a quilter, so I thought the best thing would be a little quilt for each girl cousin made with Panamanian fabric.

We knew we couldn't make six full size quilts, so we decided to make each girl cousin a doll size quilt. We bought the fabric from a local store. This type of fabric is what is commonly used by the indigenous Ngobe women on their dresses. It's relatively cheap at around $2 a yard.

The girlie cut the material up into squares and sewed them into nine patches. Each nine patch was sewn together into a larger patch to make the final piece. I think the girlie learned the importance of cutting straight and trying hard to sew straight since some of her corners did not match up. It worked out well and she had a finished quilt top!

We decided the best way to do it was to make one large quilt and use the pinking sheers to cut the large quilt into six smaller ones. That way we didn't have to finish out each quilt with binding and it would stay together.

The girlie did all of the quilting herself. We went with simple stitch-in-the-ditch sewing. The middle of the quilt is a large piece of fleece to help hold it all in place. The backing is a large piece of pink fabric that matches the other.

After it was all sewn and cut, we checked and they are the perfect size for baby dolls! I think the cousins are going to love them and it means even more since girlie made them herself for each one!

I can't wait to see the reaction on the girls' faces when they see their doll quilts! I hop they like them!

Love this!  What a wonderful way to learn and practice her sewing skills by giving.  They turned out too cute.  I think this was such a good idea.  My mother just made my daughter one of these with fabric (not quilted but sewn) for her baby doll.  I’m going to show her this post.

Thanks for sharing.  I’m sure her cousins will be so happy.  Please tell your daughter I said she did such a great job and to keep making small projects like this. 😃😍

Wow!! Well done girlie for making these quilts, they are beautiful!!  I can see the one on the doll has different size squares but girlie has done a great job to even them back out.  You must be a real proud mum!!!
