She hated being late. Even being on time was the equivalent of being late in her world.

She raced up the driveway and swept through the door with the grace of the rising starlet she was.  Her dress and hair flying to catch up.  

Everyone tried to catch up to her.  She was just too fast.

Belonging is a blessing.  However, it can be a bit of a curse if you really thought about it. More responsibility.  More appearances.  More pressure to be who they wanted and appear where they expected. 

The more you belonged, the less time you had for you.

She played nicely with the other kids; kissing cheeks and bestowing the right amount of affection and saying witty things with precise timing.  Her mere presence was a present-she knew that you knew.  She had it.  There was no argument there.  She was queen of the screen and every girl wanted to be her while every guy wanted to nail her.

She was too good for that.

She was too good for him.

He watched her from the shadows. She should have chosen him.  But it was too late.

She had been late.

Tomorrow she wouldn’t.

The cold steel of the pistol felt heavy suddenly.  He slipped it into his inner jacket pocket and moved down the dark road, becoming a shadow himself.

She had borrowed another day.
