A friend in Israel sent me a photo of her printed COVID vaccination card, which she received in the mail several days after getting her second shot. Notice that the card includes a scannable QR code. [Note: I blacked out her personal information and part of the QR code.]

By contrast, I received a small paper card when I got my first shot, with a sticker on it. My name and my birthdate were handwritten by a nurse at the registration table. Then a second sticker was placed on the card when I received my second shot. No bar code or QR code. Nor do I know if there exists any accessible online record of my having been vaccinated.

I’d like to travel abroad this year without being denied entry to another country or forced into quarantine. I wonder if my little “COVID-19 Vaccination Record Card” will do the trick.

Shouldn’t a 21st century America be able to manage automated, readily accessible record-keeping for something as critically important as vaccination against COVID?
