En 1578 se describe por primera vez el cuadro clínico de la patología, para ese momento llevaba por nombre "tussis quinta".

Para los años de 1679 - 1682 la enfermedad arrasó como una epidemia en el centro de Europa, abarcando así los siglos XVVII - XIX, quienes hicieran ésta descripción junto al estudio científico fueron Thomas Sydenham quien era médico y Thomas Willis quien era fisiólogo, médico, neurólogo y anatomista.

Cuando comenzó la tos ferina se decía que era causada por un hongo al realizar estudios en diversos niños que padecían el mismo cuadro clínico, se encontró la existencia de hongos que eran esporas pequeñas con forma redonda de color rojo pardizo, esto ocurrió en 1870 por Letzerich.

Luego de realizar una investigación en la expectoración de los niños infectados encontraron un pequeño bacilo, de allí se aisló en cultivo puro… Esto ocurrió en 1906 por Jules Bordet de allí el nombre que se le coloca a la bacteria "Bordetella".

Es impresionante los años que tuvieron que pasar para darse cuenta que no era un hongo sino un bacilo responsable de todo el cuadro clínico.

¿Cuándo comenzó el desarrollo de la vacuna? Luego de lograr aislar la bacteria en un cultivo puro comenzaron los estudios crear la vacuna, tuvo que pasar desde 1906 hasta 1920 donde un médico pediatra llamado Louis W. Saber sería el encargado de desarrollar la primera vacuna contra la tos ferina.

Para los años de 1925 hasta 2004 se estableció la vacuna de forma completa la cual brindaría inmunidad en combinación con el toxoide antidiftérico y antitetánico, siendo así la vacuna combinada que lleva por nombre DTP. Gracias a todo el esfuerzo se estima que en 2002 se logró salvar a más de medio millón de vidas.
