IBM Blockchain World Wire has officially been launched and it aims to a real-time, global payments network to support cross-border transactions and foreign exchange in more than 72 countries using digital assets, also known as cryptocurrencies or “stable coins.”
The World Wire network currently supports settlement using Stellar Lumens (XLM) and a U.S. dollar stable coin through IBM’s previously announced collaboration with Stronghold. Pending regulatory consent, six international banks, including Bank Busan, and Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation (RCBC), have all signed letters of intent to issue their own stable coins on World Wire. Upon approval, this will add Euro, Indonesian Rupiah, Philippine Peso, Korean Won and Brazilian Real stable coins to the World Wire network.

According to Jesse Lund, head of IBM Blockchain:
"We’ve created a new type of payment network that is unique in the sense that it streamlines the ability of businesses and consumers to move money around the world in real time. This enables improved transparency without sacrificing the regulatory controls and policies we need in order to make sure that there aren’t bad actors in the system. We are convening a brand new network in 72 countries that will support pay-in and payout end points in 48 currencies,”

Now that Stellar Lumens is being established as the primary bridge asset in IBM’s universal payments solution, the chances of Stellar Network being the first to see central bank issued digital tokens is very likely. The better part is that IBM has no immediate plans of giving out its own tokens, instead will be pushing XLM as the coin to its clients. IBM is building its own solutions as an extra layer above Stellar system while Stellar is an integral part of IBM’s strategy for the future.

IBM from the way as it lay out its progress on Blockchain evolution has expressed its intention to put Stellar in direct competition with Ripple to take over the cross-border transactions.
