Adapting For Rest: Holy Basil

I continue to be amazed how a 5,000 year old Ayurvedic herb from India grows rampantly here in Thailand.  It is *always* cheap at the market, and *always* available.  A bunch is *always* the standard price of 5 baht (about USD $0.18) regardless of the time of year.  And yet little is known about it here in Thailand as a ***healing herb** and it's predominantly sold "only" as a culinary herb. 

I'm taking about Holy Basil - Ocimum tenuiflorum - called Tulsi in India and in Thai: กะเพรา kaphrao.

It grows like a weed in my Thai garden here in Chiang Mai most of the year, but suffers a bit during the cool season of December-February.  This image is from one of the probably 20 plants that have 'volunteered' around the garden.

It is not to be confused with Thai basil, which is sort-of same-same, as we like to say it here: ***Same Same But Different.***

#### 🌿What makes **กะเพรา kaphrao** so fundamental to the idea of REST is that it is a powerful adaptogen.🌿  

What the heck is an adaptogen??  

> **Adaptogens or adaptogenic substances are used in herbal medicine for the claimed stabilization of physiological processes and promotion of homeostasis**. [Source](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adaptogen)

And in order to rest, we first need homeostasis - that point of internal balance.  So Holy Basil, or กะเพรา kaphrao is the fundamental herbal building block which enables rest. 

Ultimately, consuming an adaptogen like **Holy Basil** regularly helps to regulate the adrenaline-dopamine-cortisol levels, which help enable better mood, less aggression, better **REST** and yes, better sleep.  No, it doesn't make you sleepy in the least.  In fact, it's spicy-peppery-basil flavour will definitely perk up your taste buds in the short term.

Traditionally Thai people EAT Holy Basil in a typical dish you will find on every street corner: Pad Krapao Gai (ผัดกระเพราไก่).  Actually had it for lunch today! 😜

But usually, when the plants are booming, I cut it regularly, dry the leaves and use it to brew a delicious iced tea. 

Right now, the dozen or so big plants are looking very sad and sorry after 8 weeks of Northern Thai "winter" (temperatures down to about 12C overnight) but happily self sowing and beginning to sprout everywhere.

The big advantage of cutting the grass myself now (less fanatically and less regularly) is that I can wait a week or two till the 'volunteers' are easy to identify, and then dig them up for relocation.

My mission this year is to get rather a lot of Holy Basil plants stable and planted in big tubs. So I can produce more of this amazing tea for myself.  One plant happily grows to about 3 feet tall and we can harvest daily for 9 months of the year. Yes, I CAN buy it at the Thai fresh markets very cheaply, but the local habit of fertilizing with pig manure makes it less than my favourite way of obtaining it, since the pig manure often carries nasty pathogens and parasites in Asia.  

Ironically Holy Basil itself is a treatment for upset stomachs, among many other things.

All studies reported favourable clinical outcomes with no studies reporting any significant adverse events. The reviewed studies reinforce traditional uses and suggest tulsi is an effective treatment for lifestyle-related chronic diseases including diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and psychological stress. Specifically, in the almost-post-Covid era, I personally plan to INCREASE my consumption of Holy Basil for: 

- improved immune response;
- proven anti-viral effects;
- proven ability at reducing the effects of stress in the body;
- proven ability to improve breathing in asthma and bronchitis patients.

> Enhanced immune response was reported in five clinical studies [76–80]. A small randomized double-blind, and placebo-controlled trial found increased immune response with increased Natural Killer (NK) and T-helper cells in healthy adult participants compared to placebo volunteers after 4 weeks of 300 mg or ethanolic tulsi leaf extract daily taken before food [77]. Another 2-week controlled randomized study in which young adult volunteers were provided with nutrition bars fortified with 1 g of ethanolic tulsi leaf extract found that compared to control participants, the intervention group had significantly improved VO2 max, less fatigue, reduced Creatine Kinase, and improved immune response to viral infection as indicated by reduced load of human herpesvirus 6 in saliva [76]. It strikes me as way, way smarter than relying on any vaccination.

How best & easiest to consume Holy Basil?  

In this HOT country called Thailand, where mostly the average daily temperature is sweaty at best, DRINKING it makes the most sense.  An iced tea, brewed fresh each day from organic, home-grown dried holy Basil leaves, with a few slices of lime, is incredibly refreshing, cheap and easy. 

And so I'm BUSY - digging up 'volunteer' plants and potting them out, so I can move them to best manage the micro climates around the house, the front and back porches and in the garden.  Right now, the mango tree is in flower and dropping sticky sap and spent flower bits everywhere, and the established Holy Basil plant below is not at all amused! It *will* survive and thrive again, but it makes more sense to have multiple healthy plants able to harvest steadily, all year round.

What an awesome approach to growing these plants and what a wonderful plant! I would love to grow some of these now. I have different basil plants growing throughout the year, but I still need one of these. Thanks for the wonderful insight! Variety is the spice of life! There is SO MUCH diversity in the basil family.  UI always do have to chuckle when western recipes ask for "basil". 🤣  WHAT KIND!!!????

You're right that we can never have enough plants surrounding us.  Since Covid I think I'm growing more of the kind of plants that are both food and medicine.

Oh, this! Yes, right! But once you get deep into spices and herbs, most recipes like that get that response! Especially for me with pepper these days. The world of pepper is fascinating.

Indeed! What is that term I saw floating around, "growvid". People are really creative! In any case, I am also on this path. The line between food and medicine for me has since become blurry. I eat the plants that are medicinal in nature as food, at least the ones that go well with the rest of the food!

"Adaptogen" is a great new word to add to my vocabulary.  

Hope holy basils will grow "voluntarily" on my garden too as I want to try brewing it into iced tea too. What grows in my yard is sweet basil and I couldn't harvest them since grasshoppers keep eating their leaves.  

And I agree, strengthening our immune system through natural ways is probably more effective at preventing the dreaded C. What with it constantly mutating.

Thank you so much @laviesm - I'm suddenly inspired to write about the many OTHER Thai and Ayurvedic adaptogens.  I love the idea of adaptogens, since they basically help restore us to our "factory settings" and provide the conditions for the inherent natural health we are born with.  To me this is SO MUCH BETTER than ad hoc treating of symptoms.

I enjoy this as a tea but still haven't gotten around to getting some plants myself. I think there will be a much longer period when it goes dormant here, as well. We certainly aren't in the tropics, although some recent rain and heat made it feel that way briefly.

It's true that South Australia is so much drier and yes, get's some pretty darn cold winters too, up in the Adelaide Hills and also when that south westerly wind comes in off the Great Australian Bight.  Brrrr......  memories of freezing my butt off in Waipinga eons ago!!!

We're actually in the foothills in a fairly well sheltered area which gets very little frost. So the best of the Hills and the Plains in that regard. I just need to figure out how to make the most of that, better than I am doing at the moment, anyway.

I'm constantly amazed at how plants have a myriad of uses and benefits.... my fav thing to do is to plug a botanical plant name into a non-google search engine along with the words "clinical study" or just "study"... and then I LEARN.  Truly awesome way to expand our knowledge.

YESSSSS - words cannot express how much I adore this plant!!!!! The kapoor variety grows well at mine (I've tried to grow many varieties but this grows both in my garden and greenhouse) and I'm so envious at how prolific it is there. It's been a while since I've been to Thailand and I didn't realise they used them interchangeably (with Thai Basil). I can never, every grow enough for my tulsi appetite!!!

OOOOOHHH I didn't know this!!!! Wow. I've gone for Tulsi and Rose iced tea this week with lemon in the warmer weather - it's a new drink in my herbal drink cabinet (not so much a cabinet but a collection of glasses and mugs, lol) and I'm loving it. I'm drinking mullein too as my lungs are fucked this week, excuse the Australian. But I'll up the Tulsi now too - it tastes better than mullein too.

Holy basil has strong antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties due to substances such as eugenol, camphor, cineole, etc. These, as volatiles, help airways open and release the breath, thus reducing the duration and symptoms of a cold (1). Animal studies have shown that supplementation with tulsi oil for 30 days protects against bacterial colonization in the lungs (3).
For these reasons it is an excellent aid in bronchitis, rhinitis, respiratory infections, but also in asthma. At the same time, as an expectorant, it removes the mucous secretions from the lungs and the upper respiratory tract and also improves the cough. In a related study in 20 patients treated with aqueous extract of dry holy basil, an increase in vital lung capacity and relief from heavy breathing was observed (4). Also, holy basil leaf tea is a very common recipe for colds, coughs and mild indigestion. It also make sense since breathing is so intrinsically CONNECTED to stress, so an adaptogen which moderates the stress response will often hit at the foundation of a breathing problem.

Tulsi and ROSE?? Oh yum.

I'm inspired to try some new combinations and maybe blog about them in future... Tulsi/Lemongrass, Tulsi/Roselle, Tulsi/Lime etc.... pondering.

Burning question of the day: my Thai vanilla pods and their surprising healing properties post - Herbal Hive or Natural Medicine?  Your call.  We don't tend to think of vanilla as a herb.  Curious about definitions of what is a Herb anyway.  I feel a post in your future???!!!  😁

Thanks for the extra information. I'm really struggling at the moment and have no idea WHY they are so inflamed. The connection between stress and lung inflammation is clear to me, but I'm pretty relaxed at the moment - life is pretty good. There's not a lot of pollen around. I don't THINK I have COVID. I'd love to know the source so I can address it. 

What DID help was a swim in my folks saltwater pool today. Perhaps another swim and an IV drip of tulsi ...

Tulsi tea is what I drink this period to ease the tension. I am in general a huge fan of basils' family! They suit me well, relaxing and rejuvenating at the same time!

I love that you have your own plants of this beloved herb! Amazing to have it growing around like a weed...
I think that it would grow happy in my place as well (Crete, Greece). I am looking for seeds or a plant to take a couple of branches and try it this year:)

I didn't expect at all that it's not widely known in Thailand for its medicinal properties, what a pity! But I appreciate the culinary use of it :)

Oh wow - you're in Crete?  My friend, Yianni Psillou is a herbalist there and has a Distillery!!  Happy to send you some seeds - we have literally THOUSANDS!  🤣

So many of the herbs and plants here are Indian in origin and their medicinal qualities are perhaps better known in Ayurveda.  Thai is actually a predominantly oral tradition, so it kinda makes sense that the most practical elements of a plant (ie EAT it) are what's passed on the most.
